LUBBOCK, Texas – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team hit six home runs to defeat Newman University Sunday morning, 11-6. UCCS fell in the final game of the weekend to Chadron State College, 15-6 (five innings). The Mountain Lions' (2-4) six home runs against the Jets tied a program record for most home runs hit in a game.
UCCS wasted no time tying the home run record.
Brianna Santos led off the first inning for the Mountain Lions and went yard on the second pitch of the game for her first home run of the season to give UCCS a 1-0 lead.
Newman didn't back down in the bottom half of the inning and scored four runs off of four hits, including a three-run home run.
Trailing 4-1 heading into the second inning,
Alex Cook drew a walk as the leadoff batter. The next batter,
Meghan Waidler, hit her first home run of the season over the right center fence to score Cook as the Mountain Lions cut into the Jets lead, 3-4.
Newman quickly responded to the Mountain Lions offensive output and added two more runs in the bottom of the second to extend their lead to three runs, 6-3.
In the circle for the Mountain Lions was
Braelyne Crenshaw. After allowing six runs in the first two innings, Crenshaw held the Jets to just three hits and no runs in the final five innings.
After a quiet third inning by both teams where no runs were recorded, the Mountain Lions bats came alive in the fourth inning as UCCS plated four runs on five hits.
Taylor White led off the inning with a single to the left side which was repeated by
Bryn Horton.
Morgan Hernandez-Belew, who was pinch running for White, advanced to second base from Horton's single. Two batters and two outs later,
Peyton Reisman doubled to centerfield to bring in Hernandez-Belew and Horton. The ensuing batter,
Payton Romines, hit a two-run shot for her second home run of the season to give the Mountain Lions a 7-6 lead.
Resiman and
Solana Martinez joined in the home run derby as both of them hit single dingers in the sixth inning. White tallied the Mountain Lions sixth home run of the game and her first of the season in the seventh inning. Santos scored the 11
th and final run for the Mountain Lions to seal the win, 11-6. With two outs, Santos drew a walk to reach first base and then proceeded to steal second.
Saleen Quinonez reached base by an error on the Jets first baseman, resulting in Santos scoring an unearned run from second base.
White went 3-for-4 at the plate with one run scored and one run batted in. Santos added two hits, two runs and a RBI while Reisman chipped in two hits, three RBI, and two runs scored. Crenshaw earned her second win of the season after pitching a complete game, allowing four earned runs and fanning five batters.
In UCCS' sixth and final game of the weekend, the Mountain Lions faced Chadron State College in a non-conference matchup.
The Eagles jumped out to a quick start and scored three runs in the top of the first inning. UCCS reacted with four runs off three hits in the bottom half of the inning to snag a 4-3 lead. With two outs and Santos on second base, Romines drew a walk before
Courtnie Heller was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Martinez took advantage of three runners on base and hit a double to score Romines and Santos. Cook followed with a single up the middle that plated Heller to knot the game at 3-3. Waidler broke the tie after she singled down the left field line that drove in Martinez for a 4-3 lead.
After the Eagles scored three runs on two hits in the second inning,
Lexi Rayburn entered the game for starting pitcher
Gabrielle Cronin. The Eagles kept their hot bats at work in the third inning, tallying six more runs on five hits for a 12-4 lead. Four of the Eagles runs were scored from two home runs.
Cami Duffey would relieve Rayburn and pitch the final two and one-third innings.
UCCS added two runs in the third inning from Santos' double that scored Waidler and Cook. Trailing 12-6 after three complete innings, the Mountain Lions were held scoreless as CSC added one run in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth inning to run-rule UCCS, 15-6.
Santos led the Mountain Lions offense with two RBI and one run scored off one hit. Cronin suffered the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits in the first one and one-third innings.
UCCS will travel to Oklahoma City, Okla. and Edmond, Okla. Feb. 14-16 for the OCU/UCO Classic. The Mountain Lions will face Rogers State, Central Oklahoma, Oklahoma Christian, Northeastern State and Lubbock Christian.
