Cowles Throws Complete Game in 3-1 Win Over Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA, Calif. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball topped the California Polytechnic State University, Pomona Broncos 3-1 on Sunday to split the four-game series at Scolinos Field.

UCCS' Jonathan Cowles got the start on Sunday where the junior pitched a complete game to secure his first win and the Mountain Lions' second win of the season. Cowles managed to keep the Broncos off balance with the help of the UCCS defense as they registered 17 putouts in the field and four strikeouts. Both teams tallied four hits in the ball game as Matt Clarke finished 1-for-3 with two RBI.

CPP flipped the script in game four as the Broncos took the lead early in the game with a lead off solo home run from Ryon Knowles in the bottom of the first. From that point, the rest of the game would be all UCCS as Cowles went on to settle in nicely by only allowing three hits for the remainder of the game.

Down by one run, UCCS stepped up to take the go-ahead lead after a two-run third inning. Walker Rumsey drew a walk to start the inning as a Matt McDermott single through the right side sent Rumsey to third base to give the Mountain Lions runners on first and third. After McDermott stole second base, Clarke singled to left field for two RBI and a 2-1 UCCS lead.

In the third and fifth inning, CPP generated base runners and put themselves in scoring situations with two outs and bases loaded but were unable to deliver. Cowles and the Mountain Lions worked their way out of both innings by way of flyout and line drive putout as the Broncos ended the game with eight baserunners left on base.

Later in the game UCCS was in need of an insurance run and found one in the top of the seventh inning. Riley Gregory reached base from a lead off walk as head coach Dave Hajek called for the sacrifice bunt that Ryan Schmidt put down successfully, placing Gregory into scoring position. With two outs, junior Matt Berg singled up the middle to drive in Gregory and extend the Mountain Lion lead to bring the final score to 3-1.

UCCS' next series comes next weekend as the Mountain Lions head back to California for a four-game series against Biola University in La Mirada, Calif. with the first two games happening on Friday, Feb. 14 at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. (MT).
