Rothbauer-Stubbs Earns 100th Win as Mountain Lions Take Two from Cowgirls

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs head softball coach Ricki Rothbauer-Stubbs earned her 100th win at UCCS as the Mountain Lions took two games on the road to New Mexico Highlands University Saturday afternoon.  UCCS won the series opener, 9-1, as Rothbauer-Stubbs won her 100th game in game two, 3-0.

The wins improve UCCS to 7-10 overall and even their conference record at 3-3.

The Mountain Lions started game one with a three-and-out series at the plate, but closed the inning holding NMHU with three runners left on base.

Peyton Reisman drove in the first run of the game in the top of the second inning.  With the bases loaded, Reisman brought home Courtnie Heller with a sac fly to right field.

Braelyne Crenshaw, who pitched a complete game, struck out two batters and forced one batter to line out as NMHU went three-up, three-down in the bottom half of the inning.

UCCS extended their lead to 4-0 in the third inning off three hits, including two extra base hits.  Alex Cook started the scoring spree with a double to left center field that plated Meghan Waidler from third base.  The next batter, Solana Martinez, hit her second home run of the season to score Cook for the third run of the inning.

After another three-and-out inning by the UCCS defense, the offense continued their output with three more runs in the fourth inning.  Brianna Santos notched two RBIs off a single that scored Bryn Horton and Payton Romines.  One out later, Waidler hit the second sacrifice fly of the game, this time scoring Santos to boast UCCS' lead to 7-0.

NMHU plated one run in the fifth inning to prevent the shutout, but UCCS scored two insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings to seal the win, 9-1.

Crenshaw held UCCS to five hits while striking out six batters for her fifth win of the season.

The Mountain Lions racked up 12 hits on the Cowgirls.  Cook finished the game going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run.  Heller and Santos each added two hits and a run scored.

In Saturday's second game, all three runs scored by the Mountain Lions came in the fifth inning.  With two outs and Romines on first base, Santos hit a two-run home run for a 2-0 lead.  Two batters later, Heller ripped a ball through the left side to score Quinonez for the third and final run of the game.

Cami Duffey went the distance in the circle, holding the Cowgirls to only three hits while sitting down five batters.

Quinonez posted a multi-hit game with two hits and a run scored to lead the offense.

Both teams will be back in action Sunday morning for games three and four of the series, beginning at 11 a.m.
