Mountain Lions Control Hardrockers in First Game of the Weekend

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team found redemption inside Gallogly Events Center on Friday night as the Mountain Lions defeated South Dakota School of Mines at a final score of 75-68 in the team's second match-up of the season.

UCCS (9-17, 8-12 RMAC) outshot the Hardrockers (14-10, 12-8 RMAC) 48.4 percent to 30.6 percent from the floor as the Mountain Lions led for over 38 minutes to solidify the win. Three Mountain Lions tallied double-digit points on Friday night as Abby Feickert and Madi Gaibler recorded a team high 16 points with Caley Barnard scoring 12 in the contest. Gaibler also tacked on 11 rebounds to register her third double-double on the year as Katy Hovasse dished out a team high six assists.

The Mountain Lions did not let up all game as they set a tone early on in the first quarter. SDSMT jumped to an early 5-4 lead within the first 90 seconds of the game as UCCS recaptured the lead 6-5 after a Gaibler jumper and never looked back. The first quarter ended well in UCCS' favor with the Mountain Lions taking a commanding 22-12 lead.

UCCS controlled the boards in the first quarter by out-rebounding the Hardrockers 12-6 and continued to control the floor into the second quarter. Everyone had a hand in the dominating second quarter performance as seven different Mountain Lions posted points after finishing 8-16 on the floor to gather a 42-21 lead, their largest lead of the night.

In the third quarter, SD Mines came alive to outscore UCCS 17-12 as the Mountain Lions still garnered a 16- point lead after the quarter at a score of 54-38. Senior Chelsea Pearson hit two from beyond the arc to register half of UCCS' points in the third quarter.

Down the stretch, UCCS was able to stack up with the Hardrockers in offensive rebounds by matching SD Mines' five rebounds in the fourth quarter after being out-rebounded on the offensive side in the previous three quarters. The Hardrockers' applied offensive pressure into the fourth quarter by outscoring UCCS 30-21 and shortening the Mountain Lions' lead to as low as six points at a score of 66-60 with 1:53 left in the game. But the UCCS defense came alive in the remaining seconds as they controlled the paint and forced bad shots to conserve the 75-68 win.

UCCS ended the game going 11-12 from the line and out-rebounded the Hardrockers 44-40. The Mountain Lions end SDSMT's nine-game winning streak and have now tallied wins in five of their last seven games.

UCCS will be back in action tomorrow evening as they host Black Hills State University for a 5:30 p.m. game inside Gallogly Events Center.
