EDMOND, Okla. – For the second time this weekend,
Courtnie Heller used her bat to lead the University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team to a win. The Mountain Lions 2-0 win over Lubbock Christian University Sunday afternoon at Broncho Stadium in Edmond, Okla. marked the first time ever UCCS defeated LCU, the first time UCCS scored a run against LCU, and the first time LCU was shutout this season.
Heading into the fourth inning, the Mountain Lions were held to only two hits and did not pass second base. Playing as the home team, UCCS' defense stopped LCU with runner's in scoring position and one out in the top of the fourth inning to hold LCU scoreless.
Peyton Reisman started the fourth inning at the plate with a strikeout but reached first base after the pitch went by the catcher. The next batter, Heller, hit a deep ball over the left center field fence to score Reisman and give UCCS a 2-0 lead.
The Mountain Lions held the Chaps to only two hits the remainder of the game, including three-up, three-down in the seventh inning to seal the win.
Braelyne Crenshaw was solid in the circle for UCCS, pitching a complete game and her first shutout of the season. Crenshaw fanned two batters and held the Chaps to six hits.
Santos accounted for two of the Mountain Lions five hits. Heller,
Solana Martinez and
Meghan Waidler also posted a hit off LCU.
UCCS (4-7) will open the conference season Feb. 22-23 at Colorado School of Mines for a four-game series.
