PREVIEW | Mountain Lions Continue Homestand with Cowgirls, ThunderWolves

The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team continues their weekend at home against New Mexico Highlands University and Colorado State University-Pueblo
 
  • Jan. 31 at 5:30 p.m. vs. New Mexico Highlands University  (1-17, 0-13 RMAC)
  • Feb. 01 at 5:30 p.m. vs. Colorado State University-Pueblo (5-13, 4-9 RMAC)

LAST TIME OUT
  • UCCS had a hard weekend with two close games resulting in losses.  Friday night, Chadron State College kept pace with the Mountain Lions matching them shot for shot in the first half.  Each team played hard defense and had difficulties getting shots to fall with UCCS shooting only 39.3 percent from the field and CSC 37.6 percent.  Abby Fieckert put up 21 points, shooting 56 percent to go with seven rebounds, two steals, and two assists.  Kaity Hovasse stepped up on defense with seven rebounds, two steals, and a blocked shot.  Hovasse also put up two points to go with her four assists.  Ellie Moore found her teammates on offense and put up a team high six assists and went 5-for-12 in the field.  The game came down to free throws as the Eagles shot 12-for-14 (85.7 percent) while UCCS went 2-for-10 (20 percent).
  • The Mountain Lions faced MSU Denver in a similar fashion.  UCCS came out hot in the first quarter shooting 50 percent from the field, from downtown, and at the line, but cooled off in the second half only putting up seven points to finish the first half 25-26 in favor of the Roadrunners.  Madi Gaibler led the team defensively with five rebounds.  Tatum Tellin made critical free throws shooting 4-for-5 at the line to help the Mountain Lions stay in the game.  However, the Roadrunners found their momentum in the end of the third quarter and into the fourth quarter where they started to pull away.  Bree Wellington helped MSU Denver pull away with the 67-55 win by drawing fouls against the Mountain Lions to score 18 points.
 
THE SERIES
  • The Mountain Lions won the last 9-of-10 games against NMHU.  UCCS last played them at home and won 71-62 to make their all time record 21-25 in favor of NMHU.
  • UCCS' record against CSU-Pueblo is 21-35.  The team has won the last four of five home games.
 
SCOUTING REPORT
  • Jordyn Lewis is a strong presence on the offensive end the court for NMHU, ranking No. 6 in the RMAC in scoring with 16.4 a game, No. 3 in free throw percentage at 89.4 percent, and No. 6 behind the line shooting 35.1 percent.
  • JaNaiya Davis has put the responsibilities of the ThunderWolves on her shoulders ranking in the top five of four RMAC categories.  Davis leads the league in assists with 4.6 per game, No. 2 in steals with a total count of 48 for the season (2.7 per game), and No. 4 in both field goal percentage and points, shooting 45.5 percent and averaging 17.3 points a game.
 
HOT TAKES
  • Abby Fieckert continues to lead her team in all shooting categories.  Fieckert ranks at No. 20 in the RMAC for points per game (10.7 per game) and No. 16 in three-pointers made per game averaging in at 1.7 a game.
  • Madi Gaibler tied her season high in scoring Friday against Chadron State College at 16 and after the weekend comes in at No. 20 in the RMAC for rebounds (average 5.7 a game).
  • Kaity Hovasse's outstanding performance this weekend put her on the board at No. 20 in assists in the RMAC with 25 for the season and averaging 2.2 a game.  Hovasse is also tied with fellow freshman Ellie Moore at second on the team in assists.
  • Moore put herself back in the top 10 in blocks this weekend at No. 8 with 17 for the season.  She had a career high Friday night with six assists and four blocks.  Moore is third on the team for pulling boards and fourth putting in buckets averaging 5.7 a game.
 
UCCS UNDER HEAD COACH LYNN PLETT
  • Lynn Plett returns in 2019-20 for his fourth year on the sideline for the University of Colorado Colorado Springs.  The 2018-19 season finished with a six-way fourth place finish in the RMAC regular season standings with a 12-10 conference record and a 13-15 overall mark.  Off the court, the Mountain Lions received their first RMAC Brechler Award, besting all 16 teams in the conference with a 3.660 grade point average.
  • Plett spent four seasons at Northern Kentucky, where the Norse qualified for the Women's Basketball Invitational postseason tournament each season during the transition from NCAA Division II to Division I. He served on the NCAA Women's Basketball Rules Committee from 2007 through 2011.
  • Plett was the head coach at Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois, from 2002 through 2007, and his teams qualified for three NCAA Division II Tournaments in his career. Plett entered Division II coaching at Saint Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Indiana, in 1994, where he also doubled as athletic director. He won the GLVC championship and was named GLVC Coach of the Year in his first season and coached an All-American, two-time conference player of the year and a two-time NCAA Division II scoring leader.
 
UPCOMING GAMES
 
UCCS goes on the road after two weeks of home games and will have a rematch with Chadron State College and Metropolitan State University of Denver.
