PREVIEW | Men's Soccer on the Road to Start RMAC Play Against Regis and CSM

This Week's Games
  • The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team starts their conference schedule this week with two RMAC opponents.
  • On Friday, September 20, UCCS will be in Denver, Colo. taking on Regis University at 4 p.m.
  • On Sunday, September 22, the Mountain Lions will be in Golden, Colo. taking on Colorado School of Mines (CSM) at 2:30 p.m.
Game Coverage Last Time Out
  • The Mountain Lions finished their weekend of round robin play 1-0-1 as they defeated #25 St. Mary's University (STMU) on Friday and tied St. Edward's University (SEU) on Sunday. That brings their overall record to 1-1-1 this season.
  • On Friday, UCCS and STMU were tied after one half, but UCCS outshot the Rattlers 10-4 in the half. Finally, in the 78th minute, junior Sam Bonano broke the tie off an assist from Alex VonHolle.
  • Thanks to some incredible saves from keeper Scott Jensen, UCCS was able to hold on for their first win of the year.
  • On Sunday, UCCS and SEU ended the first half tied 1-1 thanks to a goal from freshman Zane Baumgardt off an assist from fellow freshman Alex Daseler.
  • The second half featured even more scoring as UCCS netted two goals while being a man down to make the score 3-1. The goals were scored by VonHolle and freshman Liam McGuire, assists to McGuire and Jensen respectively.
  • SEU managed to score two late goals to tie the game and force overtime, but neither team managed to break the tie after two overtime periods, and it would end 3-3.
RMAC Record/Standings
  • UCCS currently sits in fifth place in the RMAC standings. Fort Lewis College (2-0-2), Colorado Mesa University (2-1), Colorado School of Mines (2-2) and Metropolitan State University – Denver (2-2) are the teams ahead of them respectively.
The Series
  • Against Regis, UCCS has an all-time record of 16-38-8. Despite the poor overall record, UCCS has had success recently against Regis as they own a 6-3-1 record in the last 10 matchups, including a 5-3 victory in the most recent matchup.
  • Against CSM, UCCS has an all-time record of 15-42-3. The Mountain Lions have struggled to find an edge over CSM but will look to get back on track this weekend.
Scouting the Opponent
  • Regis currently posts a 1-2-1 overall record this season, with their only win coming in their most recent game against Fort Hayes States University.
  • The Rangers have scored six goals on 70 shots (27 on goal) and allowed six goals in their four games this season.
  • Regis also has four assists and 24 corner kicks this season.
  • Individually, Ben Shepherd and Parker Klein are leading the team in goals with two each, while Michael Jimenez is leading the team in assists with two.
  • Keeper Tim Dolan has played all four games in net for Regis and has accumulated nine saves and a save percentage of 60 percent.
  • CSM has started the season 2-2, scoring seven goals and allowing seven goals through four games. The Orediggers have 48 shots (18 on goal), five assists and 19 corner kicks so far this year.
  • Individually, Lucas King and Ben Overholt are leading the offense with five points and four points respectively. King is leading the team goals with two and Overholt is leading the team in assists with two.
  • Keeper Drew Johnson has started all four games for CSM and racked up 18 saves and a save percentage of 72 percent.
Hot Takes
  • Four different Mountain Lions scored goals this weekend, with Zane Baumgardt and Liam McGuire scoring their first career goals in the black and gold.
  • Sam Bonano also scored the first goal of the season for Mountain Lions on Friday.
  • McGuire and Alex VonHolle lead the team in points with three each, as they both had one goal and one assist over the weekend.
  • For VonHolle, this weekend allowed him to again climb the UCCS All-Time Leaderboards. He now ranks sixth all-time in points (57), eighth in goals (21, tied), sixth in shots (129), and third in shots on goal (60).
  • Scott Jensen tallied nine saves over the weekend and recorded the team's first shutout of the season. That shutout means Jensen is tied for fifth most in UCCS history with seven.
  • Jensen and Alex Daseler each also tallied an assist over the weekend, which is the first of both their careers.

  • The forecast for Golden, Colo. on Sunday shows clear skies and a high of 75 degrees. Wind is only expected to gust up to six miles per hour.
RMAC Leaders
  • Three UCCS players have cracked the top-10 in various RMAC statistical categories.
  • Alex VonHolle ranks second in the RMAC in shots with 12.
  • Sam Bonano's game winning goal is tied for third most in the RMAC.
  • Keeper Scott Jensen is in the top-10 of every RMAC goalkeeping statistical category. Jensen ranks third in goals against average (1.24), sixth in saves (11), second in shutouts (one, tied) and eighth in saves per game (3.67 per game).
UCCS Under Head Coach Brian Miller
  • UCCS is now 11-8-4 under coach Miller. Their win against #25 St. Mary's is the team's first win against a ranked opponent with Miller at the helm.
Upcoming Games
  • Next weekend, UCCS will be at home as they host two RMAC opponents for Homecoming weekend.
  • On Friday, September 27, the Mountain Lions face off against Westminster College at 6 p.m.
  • On Sunday, September 29, UCCS will play Dixie State University at 1 p.m.
