DENVER, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team shuts out the Regis University Rangers 6-0 in game four of the series at the Regis Baseball Field, as the Mountain Lions split the series.
Junior
Daniel Silva registered a career day in a Mountain Lion uniform as he came out to fan 11 batters on his way to a complete game shutout. Silva becomes the first Mountain Lion to throw a nine-inning shutout in the team's short history, as he tallies his seventh win of the season (7-1).
The Mountain Lions (23-15, 15-9 RMAC) out-hit the Rangers (12-25, 7-17 RMAC) 10-7 and were able to string together six of those hits in a six-run eighth inning to edge out Regis. UCCS cycled through five Ranger pitchers throughout the game, including three pitchers in the eighth inning.
After Regis starting pitcher Colin King and relief pitcher Kobie Schmitt combined for seven shutout innings, giving up three hits, the Rangers called to the bullpen for a new reliever to start the eighth inning.
UCCS began the inning with the latter part of their lineup as
Walker Rumsey got the rally going with a walk to get the leadoff batter on for the Mountain Lions, bringing up nine-hole hitter
Matt McDermott. McDermott finished the game 1-for-4 and made his hit count as he drove a ball to the right center gap for a stand-up double, scoring Rumsey to bring in the first run of the game. Looking to add onto their lead, head coach
Dave Hajek signaled for a sacrifice bunt that
Matthew Clarke laid down to perfection to get McDermott over to third.
That then brought up the designated hitter
Austin Allen who continued the situational hitting, as he sent a fly ball to center field for a sacrifice fly, and a 2-0 UCCS lead with two outs in the eighth inning.
With nobody on base and two outs,
Jake Anderson sparked another rally by reaching base on an infield single.
Ryan Schmidt then followed it up with another single to put runners on first and second base to force another pitching substitution for the Rangers.
Senior
Cody Norton was the first to face the new reliever and came up big for the Mountain Lions as he drove a ball to center field for the second double of the inning, while notching two RBI.
Henry Ryan then got in on the action by driving in Norton with an RBI single to left center field. After a
Tyler Matheny walk led to the third pitching change of the inning, Rumsey came up for his second at-bat of the inning to top of the six-run rally with an RBI single.
Silva never let up on Regis as he continued to go right after the Ranger hitters by striking out three batters between the eighth and ninth inning to secure the complete game shutout.
The Mountain Lions will now return back home to face Metropolitan State University Denver in a special home series. Game one of the series will be played on Thursday, Apr. 18 at 12 p.m. inside Security Service Field, followed by a double-header on Friday and a single game on Saturday.
