Softball Claims Two Wins over Skyhawks, Rangers

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – In repeat fashion of yesterday's walk off hit to defeat Fort Lewis College to end the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference pod series on Saturday, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team started Sunday with another walk off hit to defeat the Skyhawks.  UCCS notched a 13-5, six-inning win over FLC in the first game of the day and ended the pod series with a 10-4 win over Regis University.

The wins improve the Mountain Lions to 15-16 on the season and 11-8 in league games, including three straight wins.

Game 1 | UCCS 13, FLC 5 (6 innings)
Melissa Martinek continued the walk off streak when she blasted a home run over the centerfield fence in the sixth inning for the 13-5 win over FLC.

Sunday's action started with FLC scoring two runs from a dinger in the first inning.

UCCS put one run on the scoreboard in the second inning when Peyton Reisman took advantage of a passed ball to score a run from third base.

The Mountain Lions chipped in two more runs in the third inning.  Rayle Glover led off and swung at the first pitch to send the ball yard.  Taylor Reidhead copied Glover and added a second straight home run to give the Mountain Lions a 3-2 after three complete innings.

The offense exploded for UCCS as they plated nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings, led by Martinek's three-run home run in the fourth inning. In the two innings, UCCS accounted for nine runs on nine hits, two FLC errors, three walks and a passed ball.

Martinek finished the game going 4-for-5 with five RBI and three runs.  Glover chipped in three hits, two RBI and score three times, while Reisman contributed three hits, three RBI and one run.

Reidhead, who posted one hit, two RBI and scored twice, pitched the first four innings and allowed five runs on six hits with three strikeouts.  Braelyne Crenshaw earned the save after closing the game in the final two innings and holding FLC to no runs and only one hit.

Game 2 | UCCS 10, Regis 4
UCCS continued their momentum against Regis to close out the pod series with a 10-4 win.

The Mountain Lions struck first when Reidhead hit a two-run home run with two outs on the scoreboard to bring in Glover and a 2-0 lead.  Glover's single in the second inning drove in Sierra Batchelor and Taylor White for a 4-0 lead.

Regis knocked in two runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth to tie the game at 4-4.  The Mountain Lions defense held the Rangers scoreless in the final two innings.  In the final three innings, RU stranded six runners on base.

Sawyer Brewster broke the tie in the fifth inning with a three-run shot over the center field fence, giving UCCS a 7-4 lead.

Martinek's bat continued to be hot as she registered her third home run of the day, this time in the sixth inning to plate two more runs.  Resiman's single to the left fielder scored Alex Cook for the final run of the day.

Crenshaw notched the win in the circle after pitching the final 2 2/3 innings in relief.  Crenshaw fanned two batters and allowed one run on three hits.

Seven Mountain Lions tallied 11 hits against the Rangers.  Cook and Glover each went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored, as Reisman added two hits, one RBI and one run.
