COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team stays hot on the weekends as they take down the University of Central Missouri Mules in game two of the series. In a game littered with errors by both teams, the Mountain Lions were just able to edge out the Mules 6-5 in walk-off fashion.
Senior pitcher
Colin Cicere was named the starter for the game today and he continued to pitch well. Though he ended the game with a no-decision, Cicere threw six complete innings and only gave up three runs on three hits with five strikeouts. Seniors
Joe Slocum and
Cam Aufderheide came in relief for Cicere with Slocum going four full innings and Aufderheide closing the game out, earning himself the win.
Riley Gregory,
Matt McDermott and
John Mallon provided the offense for UCCS, each going 3-5, 1-4, and 1-3 respectively and accounting for five of the six runs scored in the game.
UCCS got off to a fast start, scoring three runs in the first inning to jump to an early lead. After Matt Clarke and
Jake Anderson both reached by error, a pair of singles by
Evan Richards and
John Mallon would make the score 3-0, with Richards driving in one run and Mallon driving in two runs.
Matt McDermott would continue his hot start to the season with a solo home run blasted down the left field line in the bottom of the fourth, making the score 4-0.
The Mules would not go away as they again responded with one run in the fifth and two in the sixth off of two hits and one error to begin their comeback. Entering the eighth with a score of 5-3, UCM would add a solo home run of their own to make the score 5-4 heading into the ninth. UCM started the ninth with two singles in their first three at bats. After stealing third, the Mules would force the tying run across the plate on a fielder's choice to McDermott and the game would go into extras tied 5-5.
UCCS would escape the top of the tenth inning without giving up any runs, after a pair of errors gave the Mules some life. The tenth inning ended with the Mountain Lions going down in order.
Cam Aufderheide came in at the start of the eleventh inning and would get three quick outs to give the Mountain Lions another chance to win in the bottom of the inning. After
Evan Richards and
John Mallon both walked to start the inning, the Mules were able to clear the bases by throwing out
Matt Berg, who pinch ran for Richards, at third and Mallon at second. With two outs and the twelfth inning looming,
Cody Norton would step to the plate and single through the left side, bringing
Riley Gregory to the plate. Norton would steal second to put himself into scoring position. Then Gregory, who was playing in his first game of the season, would launch a double over the right fielder's head to score Norton and give the Mountain Lions the win in dramatic walk-off fashion, 6-5.
UCCS has had two close games in a row against Central Missouri, earning one win and one loss in the process. The Mountain Lions will look to ride the momentum from today's walk-off into Sunday's match up and take the overall series with a win. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
