COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Opening day weekend of the 2019 season for the University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team started today as the Mountain Lions hosted the No. 16 nationally ranked California State Polytechnic University, Pomona Broncos at Mountain Lion Park. In a ball game that saw a combined 17 runs off 26 hits, it was the Cal Poly Broncos who provided majority of the offensive power to beat the Mountain Lions 14-3.
Reigning Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Freshman Pitcher of the Year
Jonathan Cowles was UCCS' Friday starter and gave up four earned runs off seven hits and three walks through three innings of work. Junior
Matthew Clarke provided consistency in the Mountain Lion line up recording four of UCCS' 10 hits, as he finished 4-5 with a home run, a double, and two runs scored.
The Broncos put the pressure on early as they jumped out in front of the Mountain Lions with three runs in the top of the first. Clarke answered with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first to cut into the early Cal Poly lead, 3-1.
But Cal Poly continued to tack on runs, adding one run in the third inning then busting the game open with seven runs in the fifth inning. Five batters found the gaps at Mountain Lion Park during the fifth inning as they recorded five doubles and one home run to take an 11-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth.
Trying to claw back, Clarke singled up the middle to set up
Evan Richards who drove one deep to right center field for a two-run home run, making the score 11-3 after the fifth inning.
UCCS was held to no runs after the fifth as the Broncos tallied three more runs in the sixth to make the final score 14-3, in favor of Cal Poly Pomona.
The Mountain Lions pitching staff had a hard time quieting the Broncos' bats as four pitchers gave up two or more earned runs. Cal Poly tallied a total of 16 hits in the ball game with 11 of those 16 hits being extra base hits, including nine doubles.
UCCS will aim to bounce back tomorrow as the series continues with a double header against the Broncos. First pitch for game one will be at 11 a.m. with game two starting at 2 p.m.
