COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team (1-6, 0-1 RMAC) had a tough loss tonight against Colorado Mesa University (6-2, 1-0 RMAC). UCCS had a hard time finding their momentum throughout the night and couldn't get shots to fall. The Maverick's defense forced 23 turnovers resulting in a 40-69 loss for the Mountain Lions.
The first quarter started out with stifling defense on both ends. UCCS drew the first point of the game with
Chelsea Pearson forcing a foul inside to get two shots at the line, making the second. CMU responded with a fast break resulting in two points. With 4:07 to go in the first quarter the Mavericks went on a 10-0 run ending the first quarter 5-14.
UCCS was not able to add to the score until halfway through the second quarter. Abby Feikert had two of her three field goals roll in and out.
Chelsea Pearson,
Madi Gaibler, and
Ellie Moore put work in on defense each stuffing one shot a piece and Gaibler able to add a steal to her stats for the night.
The final quarter opened up with a shot made by the Mavericks and Pearson responds with two more threes. Mavericks continued to pressure the Mountain Lions on defense forcing up off balanced shots. Gaibler lead the team in points for the night (nine).
CMU was able to capitalize on 10 turnovers by the Mountain Lions. UCCS' bench made 21 points and were able to take advantage of six forced turnovers.
UCCS will be back in the Gallogly Events Center tomorrow night at 5:30 p.m. to take on Western Colorado.
