PREVIEW | Volleyball Heads to Western Slope for Final Regular Season Road Matches

The University of Colorado Colorado Springs Mountain Lions hit the road for the eighth week of conference play to face Western State Colorado University and Colorado Mesa University.

LAST TIME OUT
  • Last weekend the Mountain Lions had a slow start, losing to the MSU Denver Roadrunners in a four-set match. Raelynn Edge helped set-up the offense with 21 assists.  Saturday night the action picked up as UCCS defeated Chadron State College in an exciting five-set match. Hannah Ammerman and Lauryn Shockely set the nets on fire accumulating 35 of the team's 68 kills.  Shockley registered two match highs in a five-set match with 21 kills and 19 digs. Edge also gained a match high for assists, setting up 47 kills. Defense was on point with five of the players reaching double digits in digs as Jordyn Kinsey led UCCS with a match high 28 digs.
THE SERIES
  • The series record for UCCS and WSCU is 23-21 with UCCS leading the series with their last two wins. 
  • The Mountain Lions played the Mavericks last October where they fell in three set match making the series record 8-33 in favor of CMU.
SCOUTING REPORT
  • The Mountaineers are ranked No. 10 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with 6-9 record.
  • Hannah Hendricks is WSCU's strong defensive player averaging 8.11 digs per set, ranking her No. 6 in the region for digs.
  • Colorado Mesa is ranked No. 4 with their RMAC record of 11-4.
  • Kasie Gilfert and Camille Smith show they are a strong offensive duo ranking in three categories (hitting percentage, kills, points).
HOT TAKES
  • UCCS is tied with CSU-Pueblo for No. 7 in the RMAC standings.  The Mountain Lions are 8-7 in conference matches and 10-13 overall.
  • Grace Nelson stays in the top 10 for hitting percentage with a .316 average.
  • Edge is also in the top 10 for service aces, ranking 10th overall with an average of .33 a set.
UCCS UNDER HEAD COACH CHRISSY ELDER
  • Coach Chrissy Elder has recorded her 100-win milestone mark on Oct. 25 at Colorado Christian University.  An interim head coach in 2006 at Missouri-Kansas City where she went 7-23, she has garnered 94 wins at UCCS (94-94), including three winning seasons.  In her eighth year as a head coach, Elder has a 101-116 record.
  • Elder has led the Mountain Lions to the RMAC Tournament for six seasons, and has coached 19 all-conference and 38 academic all-conference performers.
  • Elder came to UCCS from the University of Central Missouri where she was a member of a coaching staff that lead the Jennies to the NCAA Division II national semifinals in 2010 and the national quarterfinals in 2011.  She joined the staff in 2007 as an assistant coach before she was promoted to Head Assistant Coach in 2009. Prior to joining the staff at Central Missouri, Elder was the interim head coach for the University of Missouri-Kansas City.  She joined the Kangaroo staff as a graduate assistant coach in 2005. Elder finished her collegiate playing career at Pittsburg State University, where she also doubled as a student assistant coach for the Gorillas in her senior season.  She was an All-American and All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association setter. In 2005, Elder earned her bachelor's degree in recreation and fitness management from Pittsburg State, and in 2008 she went on to earn her master's degree from UMKC.
