LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer ends the season on a high note as they take down Colorado Christian University at a final score of 4-1 in Trailblazer Stadium.
UCCS (7-9-1, 5-8-0 RMAC) was on the road for their final regular season match as the Mountain Lions and CCU (1-16-1, 1-12-0 RMAC) each registered 12 shots in the match as the Cougars came to hold the advantage in shots on goal 6-5 and corner kicks 7-6. UCCS keeper
Scott Jensen helped the Mountain Lions hold onto their 4-1 win by bagging five saves in the win. On the offensive side, UCCS had four different Mountain Lions record a goal in the contest
Kolby Raineri leading the way with one assist and one goal for three points. Fellow freshman
Liam McGuire made program history as he registered two assists to bring his season count to nine, breaking the record for most assists in a freshman season.
The Mountain Lions came to strike first in the opening 45 minutes as redshirt sophomore
Adam Baldwin finished a cross from Raineri on the right side to give UCCS the 1-0 lead in the 6
th minute. After trading a few shots back and forth, the Cougars found themselves on the scoring end in the 13
th minute as through ball found its way through the middle of the box to then be scored by Liam Lakey to bring the score back to even 1-1.
Over half way through the first half the Mountain Lions were on the attack once again as Raineri found the back of the net with a 15-yard strike to retake the lead 2-1 in the 31
st minute. With the lead, UCCS added another score in the 37
th minute as a corner kick was headed to
Igor O'Rear with McGuire and Baumgardt both receiving an assist on the play.
Taking a 3-1 lead into the second half, UCCS continued to hold CCU out of frame as Jensen recorded two saves while the backline held the Cougars to four shots. In the 69
th minute, UCCS senior
Alex VonHolle topped off an incredible career in the black & gold by handling a McGuire pass from the left side to thread a shot in for the final 4-1 score.
VonHolle now finishes as the program's all-time leader in assists (24), second on the all-time list in points (84), and fourth all-time in goals (30).
The Mountain Lions cap off the 2019 season winning four out their last six games, outscoring the opposition 17-10.
