Mountain Lions Finish as Runners-Up With 2-0 Loss To CSM

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's soccer team finishes as the 2019 RMAC Tournament Runner-Up after falling to Colorado School of Mines at a final score of 2-0 at Mountain Lion Stadium on Saturday.

No. 1 UCCS (19-1-0, 13-0-0 RMAC) was shutout for the first time this season as they ended the contest outshooting No. 16 Colorado School of Mines (18-2-1, 11-1-1 RMAC) 19-3 with both teams matching each other in shots on goal at seven a piece. The Mountain Lions also came to hold the advantage 8-3 in corner kicks as they more than doubled CSM's corners. Freshman Taeya Schueppert came off the bench to lead the team in shots and shots on frame with five and three respectively, with Tanner Sanders adding four shots of her own as Savannah Mills also notched three shots.

Saturday's RMAC Championship and top-25 national match-up did not disappoint as both teams played a physical match. The Mountain Lions applied offensive pressure early as they recorded four shots and three corner kicks in the opening 23 minutes. Then in the 22nd minute, freshman Tanner Sanders fired a shot near the top of the box that hit the top cross bar and ricocheted in frame where CSM keeper Shannon Mooney gathered the ball before it creeped in for the first score of the match. From there, the Orediggers changed the tide as CSM's Chaney Brugman netted the first score and CSM took the 1-0 lead in the 37th minute.

Shortly after in the 41st minute, Colorado School of Mines extended their lead as a UCCS foul in the box led to an Oredigger penalty kick that CSM was able to execute successfully for the 2-0 lead.

In the second half, the Mountain Lions created offensive momentum by registering 12 shots in the half, including four of their seven shots on goal in the match. But the Orediggers had the answer for UCCS' second half offense as the backline and Mooney shut out the Mountain Lions in the second half to secure the 2-0 win.

After the contest, four Mountain Lions were named to the 2019 RMAC All-Tournament Team including Sanders, Savannah Mills, Kaitlin Hinkle, and Aleesa Muir.

With the conference tournament officially over, the Mountain Lions will now await the NCAA Selection Show on Monday, Nov. 18 at 4 p.m. where the NCAA Tournament seedings and hosting schools will be announced. Join the UCCS Women's Soccer Team on Monday for a special viewing of the NCAA Selection Show being held at Clyde's Gastropub, located in the University Center on the UCCS Campus.
