Volleyball Plays Host to Cowgirls and ThunderWolves

THIS WEEK'S MATCHES

The University of Colorado Colorado Springs Mountain Lions start week five of conference play with a 7-10 overall record and 5-4 conference record.  This weekend they play against New Mexico Highlands University and Colorado State University-Pueblo at home in the Gallogly Events Center.

  • Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. vs.  New Mexico Highlands University (1-16, 0-9 RMAC), Colorado Springs, Colo./Gallogly Events Center

LAST TIME OUT

  • The UCCS Mountain Lions started last weekend losing to Dixie State University in four sets.  They found their groove the next day as they headed to Salt Lake City to play Westminster College and swept them in a 3-0 match.  The team dominated the court achieving a .309 hitting percentage with 48 kills, the team's second most in a three set match this season.
     

The Series

  • UCCS is on a seven match winning streak against NMHU leading the series, 25-17.  The Mountain Lions swept the Cowgirls in their last match-up in October 2018.

  • The Mountain Lions last played CSU-Pueblo in the Massari Arena in Pueblo last October, sweeping the ThunderWolves.  UCCS has won the last four matches against CSU-Pueblo and lead the series all-time, 31-24.
     

Scouting Report

  • The Cowgirls face The Mountain Lions with a 1-16 overall record and 0-9 conference record.  Senior Tiffany Matchett leads NMHU with 287 of the teams kills and 357 digs.  

  • CSU-Pueblo enters the weekend 7-10 overall and 5-4 in conference play.  Junior Jazzy Espinoza is a force at No. 6 and No. 8 in RMAC rankings for service aces (.38/set) and blocks (70), respectively.
     

Hot Takes

  • Raelynn Edge takes the No. 5 spot in the UCCS career record books for assists with 2,453, topping Adreinne Epple who had 2,413.  

  • Josie Russell had a big weekend with 18 kills and only four errors for a hitting percentage .378.

  • Grace Nelson stays in the RMAC top 10 rankings for hitting percentage with .313.

  • Freshman Emily Ettel continues to pull her weight ranking number eight in the RMAC for assists averaging 7.04 a set.
     

UCCS Under Head Coach Chrissy Elder

  • Chrissy Elder is in her seventh season as Head Coach of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball program.  In her first six seasons, Elder has led the Mountain Lions to the RMAC Tournament every year, and has coached 19 all-conference and 28 academic all-conference performers.

  • Elder came to UCCS from the University of Central Missouri where she was a member of a coaching staff that lead the Jennies to the NCAA Division II national semifinals in 2010 and the national quarterfinals in 2011.  She joined the staff in 2007 as an assistant coach before she was promoted to Head Assistant Coach in 2009. Prior to joining the staff at Central Missouri, Elder was the interim head coach for the University of Missouri-Kansas City.  She joined the Kangaroo staff as a graduate assistant coach in 2005. Elder finished her collegiate playing career at Pittsburg State University, where she also doubled as a student assistant coach for the Gorillas in her senior season.  She was an All-American and All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association setter. In 2005, Elder earned her bachelor's degree in recreation and fitness management from Pittsburg State, and in 2008 she went on to earn her master's degree from UMKC.
     

T-MINUS 2 Wins

  • Coach Elder is two wins away from reaching the 100-win milestone marks.  An interim head coach in 2006 at Missouri-Kansas City where she went 7-23, she has garnered 91 wins at UCCS (91-91), including three winning seasons.  In seven years as a head coach, Elder has a 98-114 record.
