YellowJackets Outlast Mountain Lions 62-58

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team drops a home game against Black Hills State University, as the Mountain Lions' missed opportunities for defensive rebounds down the stretch were costly with the YellowJackets coming out on top 62-58 inside Gallogly Events Center.

Junior Madi Gaibler finished with a team high 13 points and four assists as the Mountain Lions edged out BHSU 40-39 in rebounds. The UCCS bench came alive to score 32, but the YellowJackets turned around to register 19 points off Mountain Lion turnovers.

Black Hills State jumped out to a 22-10 lead in the first quarter as the difference maker was UCCS going 0-4 from beyond the arc as the YellowJackets shot 4-9 from the arc. BHSU also turned five of UCCS' turnovers into six points to take a 12 point lead into the second quarter.

The second quarter was all UCCS as they outscored the YellowJackets 17-10 to make the score 32-27 going into half. UCCS turned up the defensive pressure with full-court defense that forced BHSU to make mistakes with Maddie Golla making a key steal that brought momentum to the Mountain Lions' side.

After the first half, UCCS continued the defensive pressure and physical defensive play with Caley Barnard flying up and down the court making two huge hustle plays that resulted in steals for Barnard. Both teams matched shots in the third quarter as they shot 7-16 from the field with the Mountain Lions making it a four point game as Black Hills led 49-45.

Freshman Elle Johnson helped spread the floor on the offensive side of the ball for the Mountain Lions by providing four rebounds and eight points off the bench. In the second half, Johnson brought UCCS within one to make the score 59-58, by draining a jumper from the paint and drawing the and-1 with 35 second left in the game. But not coming up with a defensive stop and registering a defensive rebound hurt the Mountain Lions as the YellowJackets sealed the win.

The Mountain Lions will be back at home Saturday evening as they host South Dakota School of Mine and Technology at 5:30 p.m.
