After Double Overtime Finish, UCCS Draws With #12 St. Mary's

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – In the first match of this two-game road trip, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team battled the #12 St. Mary's Rattlers into a double overtime match, which ended in a 2-2 tie.

UCCS would be the first to strike in the 20th minute as Jack Mills sent a corner kick in front of goal where the ball redirected towards the top of the box and Sam Bonano sent his first goal of the season into the left side of the net. The Rattlers would put the pressure on goalkeeper Scott Jensen in the first period, but he did not show any sign of slowing as he recorded four saves and sent UCCS into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

In the second period, the Rattlers continued to place the ball on the Mountain Lion's side of the field when a foul on goalkeeper Jensen, in the 72nd minute, granted Rattler's Lewis Wilson with a penalty kick in which resulted in a STMU goal, and a score of 1-1.

The game would shift to STMU's side as senior Pato Botello Faz would score off of a deflection 15 yards out to take the 2-1 in the 83rd minute. The lead would not affect the Mountain Lions as UCCS would quickly answer as the Mountain Lion offensive front would pull STMU goalkeeper towards the front of the goalie box where Jake Demerath would chip the game tying goal over the keeper's head in the 85th minute.

Moving into overtime, each team would record two shots in the first overtime period. But it would be in the 106th minute where Jensen would deny a quality shot off a free kick, from 30 yards out to end the game in a 2-2 tie.

UCCS  was out-shot 23 to 8 in the contest, but Jensen would use every inch of his six-foot height to record the game leading nine saves for the Mountain Lions.

The Mountain Lions will be back in action on the road Sunday, Sep. 9 at 12 p.m. as they take on St. Edward's.
