COLORADO SPRINGS – April 14, 2018 – Junior pitcher
Taylor Reidhead struck out 14 batters in the series opener Saturday afternoon to lead University of Colorado Colorado Springs to a 6-2 win over Fort Lewis College at Mountain Lion Field. UCCS completed the doubleheader sweep with a five-inning, 11-0 win in game two.
Reidhead's 14 strikeouts are the second most in program history in one game, one off the program record set by
Stephanie Chitkowski on March 8, 2015 against New Mexico Highlands. Reidhead threw a perfect game for the first six innings, before walking the leadoff batter in the seventh inning and surrendering two runs on one hit to close the game.
The Mountain Lions scored two runs in the first inning.
Melissa Martinek scored the first run of the game from second base after
Lexi Belligan reached on a fielder's choice that resulted in Martinek reaching third base and then scoring on an error.
Alex Cook hit a triple down the left field line that scored Reidhead for a 2-0 UCCS lead.
Belligan brought in two more runs in the third inning with a single to centerfield that plated
Whitney Weber and Martinek.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Bellingham added her third RBI of the game with a single to left center to score Martinek.
UCCS' final run of the game came from Belligan who led off the sixth inning with a triple down the right field line. Reidhead followed with a sacrifice fly to score Belligan.
FLC closed the game with two runs on one hit and one error.
Belligan went 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs batted in and one run scored. Martinek added two hits and three runs scored, and
Alex Cook brought in one run on three hits.
Reidhead recorded her sixth complete game of the season in the circle, and her second shutout.
In game two of the series, the Mountain Lions earned their fifth shutout win of the season, holding FLC to six hits in five innings.
All 11 UCCS runs came in the first three innings, including four in the first. With bases loaded and one out,
Rayle Glover hit a single to third base and scored Reidhead and Belligan.
Taylor White followed with a single to short stop to score Glover and
Alex Cook for a 4-0 lead.
In the second inning and two outs on the board, Weber hit a single to reach first base, then stole second and third base before scoring on Belligan's single.
UCCS sealed the win with six runs on seven hits in the third inning. White,
Saleen Quinonez, Martinek, Belligan and Reidhead each posted RBIs for the Mountain Lions in inning three.
Belligan, Cook and Glover scored two runs each for UCCS, while Belligan and Glover added two RBIs. White finished with three runs batted in on one hit.
Cami Duffey led UCCS in the circle, pitching all five innings and earning her third shutout of the season.
The Mountain Lions have now won five straight games and nine of their last 10, and take a six-game lead over the Skyhawks.
Both teams will close out the series Sunday morning with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
