Third Quarter Rally Falls Short against Mavs

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – A hot third quarter that saw the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team outscore Colorado Mesa University, 18-9, was quickly swallowed up by the Mavericks as they handed UCCS their first conference loss Friday night in Brownson Arena, 67-45.

After receiving a pregame technical foul on CMU, Abby Feickert started the game with two made free throws for the Mountain Lions only lead of the game.

UCCS trailed the Mavericks at the half, 34-20, but cut the lead down to five after the third stanza, 43-38, after making 6-of-12 field goals, 2-of-3 from long range and all four free throw attempts.  The Mountain Lions started the second half with three straight layups by Jae Ferrin, Kelly O'Flannigan and Caley Barnard.  Barnard added two free throws before Maddie Golla drained a three-point to close out an 11-0 run.

Colorado Mesa responded in the fourth quarter with five straight three-point field goals to cap off a 15-0 run.  CMU finished the quarter hitting 6-of-8 from downtown and outscoring UCCS, 24-7.

Barnard and Feickert paced the offense for UCCS.  Barnard tallied 11 points after making 3-of-6 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe.  Feickert finished with 10 points, four of which came from the free throw line and the other six from behind the arc. Feickert remains perfect from the line this season, nailing all 14 free throw attempts.

UCCS blocked a season high six shots tonight.  Ferrin and Anna Davern blocked two shots each.  Ferrin and Feickert added a team high seven caroms each.

The Mountain Lions shot a season low 26 percent from the floor with a season low 13 made field goals (13-of-50).  However, the Mountain Lions tied a season best free throw percentage (75 percent) after making 15-of-20.

The Mavericks Jaylyn Duran led all scorers with 20 points, 15 of which were three pointers.

UCCS will travel to Western State Colorado University on Saturday for a 5 p.m. game.
