THIS WEEK
The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team will play their first road games of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season when they head to the Western Slope to face Colorado Mesa University on Friday, and Western State Colorado University on Saturday.
ABOUT THE MOUNTAIN LIONS
UCCS is coming off their first win of the conference season after defeating Colorado School of Mines last Saturday at home, 73-69, in the Mountain Lions home opener. The Mountain Lions own a 1-4 overall record (1-0 RMAC).
Through five games,
Jae Ferrin leads the Mountain Lions in scoring with 10.2 points per game. Ferrin is also shooting a team best 52.5 percent from the floor (21-of-40) and has grabbed a team high 21 rebounds. Ferrin and Feickert have both started all five games for UCCS.
Feickert is a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe and is averaging 7.2 points per game. She has made a team high six three-point field goals and added seven assists and four steals.
Kelly O'Flannigan, who has started four of five games, has dished out a team high nine assists. She has added 22 points, two steals and 14 rebounds.
The Mountain Lions are averaging 56.2 points per game and hold a 2.0 rebound advantage over their opponents (34.8 average).
LAST TIME OUT
In the win over the Orediggers,
Abby Feickert,
Chelsea Pearson, and
Anna Davern each recorded a team high 12 points as Davern came to record a team high six rebounds as well in the contest.
UCCS set the tone early as the Mountain Lions drained three three-pointers to jump out to an 11-6 lead in the opening four minutes of the game. From there, the Orediggers came to play catch up for the rest of the game as Colorado School of Mines brought the score within one point in the third period to have their shortest deficit of the game.
On the game, UCCS finished 18-24 at the line with Feickert finishing 6-for-6. In the Mountain Lions' five games this season, Feickert is a perfect 10-10 at the line.
SCOUTING COLORADO MESA UNIVERSITY
Colorado Mesa University is on a three-game winning streak. The Mavericks own a 4-1 overall record and are 1-0 in the league after recording a 53-41 road win against Western State last Saturday.
CMU is outscoring their opponents by 14.4 points per game, netting 67.2 points offensively while holding their opponents to 52.8 points. The Mavericks are also outrebounding their opponents by three rebounds per game.
CMU is led by Jaylyn Duran with 22.2 points per game. Duran has sunk 18 three-point field goals and is averaging a league best 3.6 made three-point field goals per game. Sydni Brandon leads the team with 6.8 rebounds per game, along with 24 assists and 10 steals. Brandon's 6.0 assist/turnover ratio is tops in the RMAC.
SCOUTING WESTERN STATE COLORADO UNIVERSITY
Western State Colorado University suffered their first loss of the season this past weekend with a 53-41 home loss to Colorado Mesa. WSCU started the season with two road wins against Western New Mexico University and Arizona Christian. WSCU is 2-1 on the season and 0-1 in RMAC games.
The Mountaineers are edging their opponents by 3.0 points and 3.0 rebounds per game.
WSCU has started all five players through their first three games. Jessie Erickson leads the offense with 9.3 points per game, followed by Tammarrah Gothard and Samantha Coleman's 9.0 average. Gothard also leads the Mountaineers in rebounds (20) and steals (eight).
HEAD COACH LYNN PLETT
After the first RMAC championship in program history in his first season in 2016-17,
Lynn Plett returns for his third year on the sideline for the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. He guided the Mountain Lions to the RMAC Tournament Championship in 2017 and the third straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
In the 2017-18 season, Plett coached All-RMAC honorable mention
Shanah Leaf as well as five Mountain Lions who received honors on the RMAC All-Academic team. Last season proved to be a rebuilding year for the Mountain Lions as they lost three starting seniors while adding six new players to the roster. UCCS finished the season with an overall 10-17 record with a 10-12 conference record, which placed the Mountain Lions 10th in the RMAC conference.
Plett coached two All-RMAC First Team student-athletes for the 2016-17 season in Brittany Hernandez and Tori Fisher. The Mountain Lions tied for second in the RMAC standings and won the tournament with the best defensive performance in championship game history in a 53-37 victory against Regis. UCCS advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in its furthest postseason run since 2015.
Plett spent four seasons at Northern Kentucky, where the Norse qualified for the Women's Basketball Invitational postseason tournament each season during the transition from NCAA Division II to Division I. Prior to NKU, he spent five seasons as the head coach at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Mo. Plett served as the head coach at Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill. from 2002 through 2007. Plett entered Division II coaching at Saint Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Ind., in 1994, where he also doubled as the athletic director.
UP NEXT
UCCS will return home to Gallogly Events Center Dec. 15-16 to play host to Regis University and Colorado Christian University. The games will mark the start of a six-game home stand.
