CANYON, Texas -- The No. 12 University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's soccer team matched up against Angelo State University for an NCAA Regional Tournament match where UCCS won a double overtime thriller 2-1.
Anna Gregg led the Mountain Lions with six shots and five shots on goal.
Savannah Mills and
Amelia Junge provided goals in regulation as
Kylie Cleary came off the bench to score the game-winning goal. In her first start as a UCCS Mountain lion, goalkeeper
Alexis Walker bagged three saves in her collegiate debut.
In the opening 45 minutes, both teams found their way onto the scoreboard as UCCS started things off in the 10
th minute with
Savannah Mills dribbling her way past a defender within a 10 yard striking range to chip one in for the 1-0 Mountain Lion lead.
Later in the 30
th minute, UCCS'
Kelsey Lanham set up a long free kick from 40 yards out that found
Amelia Junge in front of goal who finished it off for a 2-0 Mountain Lion lead.
The Mountain Lions came to hold the lead for a majority of the first half, but Angelo State would flip the script in the ladder parts of the first half recording two goals in the span of three minutes. A UCCS penalty up top of the box presented a free kick for Angelo State that Kia Benham placed into the top right corner of the net to cut the UCCS lead 2-1 in the 40
th minute. Then in the 43
rd minute, South Central region goal leader Trenadey Scott made a scoring appearance to tie the match 2-2.
The NCAA Regional match saw no scores in the second half as UCCS and ASU traded shots back and forth with
Tori Maydew placing two quality shots on goal that could not find the back of the net. In regulation, UCCS out-shot Angelo State 20-8.
ASU put the pressure on in the first overtime period as Scott placed two shots on goal that were both saved as UCCS goalkeeper
Alexis Walker was caught out of goal and the UCCS backline saved the first shot, then Walker left her feet for the second shot as she saved a ball that would have found the inside right post. Neither team was able to record the game-winner as the match was settled in double overtime.
UCCS'
Kylie Cleary and Gregg put the match away in the first minute of double overtime with Gregg providing a through ball that Cleary ran with and fired into the right side of the goal for the game-winner.
UCCS out-shot the Belles 22-10 and held the advantage in shots on goal 13-6, with ASU coming to hold the advantage in corner kicks 3-0.
With the win, the Mountain Lions now move on to the NCAA Regional Semifinal match where they will take on No. 2 seed West Texas A&M University on Sunday at 1 p.m. (MT). This will mark the second straight season where UCCS will match-up with West Texas A&M in the NCAA Regional Semifinal match. The Mountain Lions faced the Lady Buffs earlier in the season in September where the Lady Buffs won 2-1 in Canyon, Texas.
