LAS VEGAS, N.M. –
Taylor Smith notched 15 kills and hit an astounding .565 offensively to lead the University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team to a 3-0 win at New Mexico Highlands University Saturday evening (-24, -24, 21). The win is the Mountain Lions seventh victory in their last eight matches, and their fifth sweep in the last eight matches as they improve to 9-10 on the season (7-4 RMAC).
UCCS fought back in the first set. Trailing since the fifth point in the set (2-3), UCCS stormed back late in the set. Down at set point, 24-21, UCCS started their comeback after NMHU served an error, followed by an ace from
Jordyn Kinsey. Another error by the Cowgirls tied the set at 24-24.
Josie Russell gave the Mountain Lions a 25-24 lead and sealed the win with after blocking a NMHU attack.
Smith committed only two errors on 23 attempts as the Mountain Lions hit .305 as a team.
Raelynn Edge orchestrated the offense with a season high 43 assists in three sets.
Lauryn Shockley added nine kills, followed by
Lauren Brown's and
Alyssa Brinton's eight kills. Brown registered a .438 hitting mark with only one error on 16 attempts.
Russell finished with five kills, a solo block and three block assists.
Kinsey led the back row with a team high 14 digs.
UCCS will return to Gallogly Events Center Oct. 12-13 to play host to Regis University and Colorado Christian University.
