Mountain Lions Record 20 Hits in Weekend-Opening Win vs. Regis

DENVER – Bryan Chapin and Matthew McDermott each finished with four hits as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs opened the weekend with a 12-8 victory against Regis today at the MSU Denver Regency Athletic Complex. The Mountain Lions (17-15, 12-9 RMAC) recorded a season-high 20 hits against the Rangers (22-11, 15-7 RMAC).

McDermott recorded three doubles today in his first four-hit game of the season. Chapin extended his multiple-hit streak to four games and led the team with three runs. The Mountain Lions set new season-highs with seven doubles and two triples.

Jamie Crabtree's home run at the start of the second inning sparked a six-run performance for the Mountain Lions for an early 6-0 lead. It was his third home run in the last five games. Zach Hall hit his second triple of the season for two runs and started a string of four straight hits for UCCS that finished with a two-RBI double from Colin Ludwig.

The Mountain Lions put runners on second and third in the third inning with one out, but wouldn't score until a three-run performance in the fifth inning. Tyler Matheny hit a two-out, two-RBI triple to close out the scoring in the fifth as UCCS built a 9-2 lead against the Rangers.

Regis scored one run in the sixth and two in the seventh and cut the Mountain Lion lead down to 9-5. UCCS recorded three straight doubles and four total in the bottom of the eighth inning, and expanded the lead to 12-5. The Rangers led off the top of the ninth with three straight hits, and the same three batters scored to make it a 12-8 game with one out before the Mountain Lions turned a double play and secured the weekend-opening victory. Will Felton earned the win in a five-inning start.

The Mountain Lions are on their longest winning streak of the season at three games, and have posted double-digit hits in the last seven games. The 20 hits for UCCS surpassed the previous season-high of 16 hits set twice this season, the first against Regis in a seven-inning game on March 4, and the second on Monday in a nine-inning game with Colorado Mines. The Mountain Lions haven't committed an error in the last four games and in six of the last seven.

UCCS will be back at Denver for nine-inning games against MSU Denver at noon, and Regis at 3:30 p.m. Both games will be played at the Regency Athletic Complex at MSU Denver.
