UCCS Scores Final Five Runs for Split at Black Hills State

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs scored the final five runs of the day and Lexi Belligan scored the game-winning run on a walk as the Mountain Lions (17-28, 16-24 RMAC) split the final games of the series at Black Hills State (7-37, 5-31 RMAC). The Yellow Jackets won the first game 5-1 before UCCS finished the season in a 6-5 victory in game two.

Jordyn Cusimano put UCCS up 1-0 in game one with a single in the second inning and moved to second on a ground out before she scored on Leigh Lancaster's single to right field. Stephanie Chitkowski struck out three batters in the bottom of the inning as part of seven in game one. Black Hills State scored two runs with the fourth for a 2-1 lead against the Mountain Lions and added three more runs in the fifth as all five runs were scored with two outs.

UCCS put a runner on base in the sixth inning but a double play kept the Mountain Lions out of scoring position, and the Mountain Lions went down in order in the seventh as Black Hills State earned its second win of the weekend. Cusimano finished two-for-three at the plate in her third multi-hit game of the season.

The Yellow Jackets opened game two with a solo home run and took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Megan Duffy scored to cut the lead in the half after Belligan hit a single to left field in the third inning, but Black Hills State scored three in the bottom of the fourth for a 5-1 advantage.

Belligan scored in the sixth inning off a single from Makenna Smith, and Meghan Waidler hit a two-RBI double to cut the Yellow Jacket lead to 5-4. Melissa Martinek led off the seventh inning with a double, and a walk from Whitney Weber and a single from Belligan loaded the bases with no outs. The Mountain Lions tied the game at 5-5 after Claire Nibbe was hit by a pitch and Cusimano drew the walk that scored Belligan for the 6-5 lead before a fly out to left field ended the top of the inning. The Mountain Lions turned a double play in the seventh and ended the game after Cusimano caught a ball in the left field foul area.

Belligan and Martinek both went two-for-four in the second game and Belligan scored two runs for the third time this season. Christina Patton earned the win with a six-inning start and Chitkowski earned her second save of the season in the seventh inning.

UCCS ends the season in a tie for ninth in the RMAC standings. Chitkowski finished her career fourth in program history with 252 strikeouts and fifth with 5.5 strikeouts per seven-inning game.
