UCCS Out-Hits Air Force in 9-8 Loss to Falcons

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs out-hit Division I Air Force, but the Falcons scored in walk-off fashion in a 9-8 decision at Falcon Field. Zach Hall and Matthew McDermott both went three-for-four as the Mountain Lions (22-23) finished with 12 hits against the Falcons (20-20).

Hall opened the game with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Efrain Medina to right field, but Air Force took a 3-1 lead with a pair of home runs in the bottom of the first inning. UCCS manufactured three runs in the third inning as Hall scored his second run of the game, Medina recorded his second RBI on a double that scored Tyler Matheny, and Medina scored off a single by Bryan Chapin for a 4-3 lead.

McDermott scored his first run of the game as UCCS expanded its lead to 5-3 in the fourth inning, and the Falcons cut it back to a one-run game on a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning. Medina added two more RBIs with a double to left field in the sixth as McDermott and Matheny crossed home plate for the second time each for a 7-4 Mountain Lion lead. A bases-loaded triple for Air Force tied the game at 7-7 in the bottom of the sixth.

John Mallon made it an 8-7 lead for UCCS in the seventh after McDermott doubled down the left field line, and the lead held until the bottom of the eighth when the Falcons hit a solo home run on the first pitch of the inning. Air Force struck out the side in the top of the ninth and used a one-out double to reach base in the bottom of the ninth. A wild pitch and a throwing error on the play allowed the winning run to score for the Falcons in the 9-8 setback for the Mountain Lions.

Medina finished with four RBIs, one off his season-high. Chapin extended his hitting streak to 19 games and Hall moved to 10 straight games in his fourth three-hit game in the last eight contests. Blake Williams took the loss on the mound.

UCCS and Air Force will meet again next Tuesday in a 6 p.m., game at Security Service Field. The Mountain Lions will finish the conference season this weekend in a four-game series at Colorado State-Pueblo and start with a single game on Friday at 7 p.m.
