GOLDEN, Colo. – Jamie Crabtree hit the first grand slam in University of Colorado Colorado Springs history as part of a six-run inning at the end of game two, but the rally fell short as the Mountain Lions (14-15, 9-9 RMAC) suffered a pair of setbacks to the Colorado School of Mines at Jim Darden Field. The Orediggers (17-10, 9-5 RMAC) earned a 12-2 victory in game one before the 9-8 decision in seven innings in game two.
Scott Martinez opened the scoring for the Mountain Lions with a double to score John Mallon in the second inning in game one, and Crabtree made it a 2-0 lead with a solo home run in the fourth inning. Colorado Mines put nine straight batters on base in the bottom of the fourth and took a 4-2 lead against the Mountain Lions.
The Orediggers scored two in the fifth and six in the sixth while holding the UCCS offense to four base runners in the seventh through ninth innings in game one. Tyler Matheny, Colin Ludwig and Matthew McDermott each finished with multiple hits for the Mountain Lions. Eric Neeley took the loss with four strikeouts in 4.1 innings.
Mines opened a 6-0 lead through the first three innings in the second game before Bryan Chapin hit a two-RBI double in the fourth to score Mallon and Ludwig. The Orediggers expanded the lead to 9-2 through the fifth inning, and the game remained at 9-2 going into the seventh inning.
The Mountain Lions loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with no outs and Efrain Medina's single through the right side kept the bases loaded but cut the Mines lead down to 9-3. Ludwig made it a 9-4 game with a single to left field to keep the bases loaded for Crabtree, who hit his second home run of the day in the first grand slam in program history to cut the Oredigger lead down to 9-8 with no outs. Mallon ground out to third base in the first out of the inning and Martinez reached base with a single to right field. A fly ball to right field and a line drive to center field ended the UCCS rally after a six-run inning.
Chapin finished with a season-high three hits while Matheny and Medina each added two hits. Daniel Silva was charged with the loss in a 4.2 inning start.
UCCS and Mines will finish the series with another doubleheader on Monday. First pitch is set for noon in Golden, Colo.
