GREELEY, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs built an early 4-0 lead through the top of the third inning against Division I Northern Colorado (15-19) before the Bears scored the next 10 and eventually took a 10-6 decision against the Mountain Lions today at Jackson Field.
Zach Hall went three-for-five at the plate with two runs for UCCS (21-19).
John Mallon made it a 1-0 Mountain Lion lead in the second inning after he hit a two-out single, advanced to second after
Jerry Lacayo was hit by a pitch, and then scored on single by
Matthew McDermott to left field. UCCS expanded the lead to 4-0 in the top of the third with four hits and three runs from Hall,
Efrain Medina and
Bryan Chapin.
Northern Colorado responded with three runs in the bottom of the third and took the 5-4 lead with a two-run home run in the fourth. UCCS put runners into scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings but couldn't score as the Bears expanded their lead to 9-4 by the end of the seventh.
Scott Martinez earned a leadoff walk in the ninth inning and advanced to third on a double from Hall. A wild pitch scored Martinez and moved Hall to third, and Hall made it a 10-6 game on a groundout by
Tyler Matheny at first base. Medina hit a single up the middle with one out, but Northern Colorado earned a strikeout and groundout to end the game.
Hall finished with his fifth game this season with three or more hits as one of four Mountain Lions with multiple hits. Chapin extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a single in the third. The UCCS pitching staff combined for seven strikeouts as
Daniel Silva was charged with the loss in a two-inning relief appearance.
UCCS will return home for a four-game series with MSU Denver in the final home conference games of the season. The Mountain Lions and Roadrunners will start with a nine-inning game at 3 p.m., on Friday, April 21, at Spurgeon Field.
