AZTEC, N.M. –
Stephanie Chitkowski earned her first shutout of the season as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs opened with a 12-0 victory in game one, but a four-for-four performance from
Rayle Glover wouldn't be enough in game two as the Mountain Lions (10-25, 8-10) suffered a 10-7 setback to Fort Lewis (6-33, 5-25 RMAC) at the Aztec Sports Complex. Glover went a combined six-for-seven between the two games with a double and home run.
Amanda Nobles scored early in game one after she capitalized on a fielding error to reach base and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Glover. The Mountain Lions put together seven straight hits in the second inning and scored six runs for a 7-0 lead, and
Leigh Lancaster hit a two-RBI single in the fourth for a 9-0 advantage. Nobles hit a single to left field and scored
Jordyn Cusimano later in the inning for a 10-0 lead.
Fort Lewis loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth with one out before a 6-4-3 double play preserved the shutout.
Claire Nibbe and Glover scored in the top of the fifth and extended the UCCS lead to 12-0 while Chitkowski struck out two batters in the bottom of the fifth in the run-rule decision. She improved to 7-8 and finished with five strikeouts while
Nikki Hoffman led the offense with a three-for-four performance.
UCCS continued the strong offense with four runs in the first inning of game two, capped by a two-RBI double from
Makenna Smith. Fort Lewis scored its first runs of the day with a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning and cut into the Mountain Lion lead with another run in the second inning. Glover battled in her at-bat in the third inning and hit her third home run of the season on her 11th pitch for a 5-3 UCCS lead. The Skyhawks manufactured two runs in the bottom of the third and tied the game at 5-5.
Fort Lewis took its first lead of the day with two more runs in the fourth inning and UCCS tied the game with runs from Nibbe and Glover in the fifth. The Skyhawks retook the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and the Mountain Lions put runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings but couldn't cut into the Fort Lewis lead as the Skyhawks won 10-7.
Glover finished with a career-high four hits in the second game and Nibbe added a two-for-four performance for the Mountain Lions.
Christina Patton took the loss in the second game with a five inning start.
