COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Scott Martinez scored on a single from Tyler Matheny in game one and a wide throw at home plate in game two allowed John Mallon to score as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs earned a pair of walk-off performances against New Mexico Highlands today at Spurgeon Field. The Mountain Lions (20-18, 15-12 RMAC) won 3-2 in game one and 6-5 in game two against the Cowboys (13-25, 9-18 RMAC).

Zach Hall scored in the first inning of game one after he led off with a double, and Colin Ludwig expanded the lead to 2-0 in the third inning on a single from Jamie Crabtree. Eric Neeley threw the first complete game in program history with five strikeouts in game one. The Mountain Lions didn't allow the Cowboys to reach scoring position until the fifth inning, and held Highlands scoreless until the seventh inning.

New Mexico Highlands strung together three straight hits in the seventh inning to cut the Mountain Lion lead to 2-1, and a wild pitch scored the tying run with one out. UCCS earned a fly out to center field and Neeley struck out the Cowboys' Danny O'Keefe looking on a full count as the teams went to the bottom of the seventh tied 2-2. Martinez singled to left field on his first pitch, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Matheny's single to center field.

The teams used home runs to score early in game two, with Highlands on the scoreboard with a two-run home run in the first inning and Mallon with a solo home run on the first pitch of the second inning. Hall hit a three-run home run later in the inning as UCCS took a 4-2 lead and Tyler Keil pushed the lead to 5-2 after double from Ludwig.

The Cowboys chipped at the Mountain Lion lead with one run in the fourth and fifth innings, and tied the game at 5-5 with bases loaded and out one in the sixth. UCCS kept Highlands from scoring the go-ahead run with a force out at home plate for the second out, and a fly out to center field ended the opportunity for the Cowboys with the bases loaded.

The Mountain Lions retired the Cowboys in order in the top of the seventh as the game remained tied at 5-5, and Mallon led off the seventh with a single to right field. He advanced to second on a passed ball and moved to third on a single by Bryan Chapin. With no outs, Matthew McDermott put down a sacrifice bunt, but reached safely as the Cowboys focused on home plate. The throw to home plate was wide as Mallon safely scored his second run of the game for the 6-5 victory.

Mallon and Hall each went three-for-four with a home run in the second game. Ludwig, Medina and Chapin both posted two hits as the Mountain Lions finished with 13 team hits. Daniel Silva struck out five batters in a four and two-third inning start while Colin Pratt earned his second win of the season in one and two-third innings.

UCCS and New Mexico Highlands will close out the series on Saturday with a single nine-inning game at noon.
