COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –
Bryan Chapin hit a two-out walk-off single to left field on a full count in the bottom of the ninth and scored
Colin Ludwig from second base as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs earned a split with Colorado Christian in the first two games of a four-game series. The Mountain Lions (13-12, 8-6 RMAC) won the second game 9-8 after a 7-5 loss in the first game to the Cougars (7-17, 1-9 RMAC).
UCCS scored three runs in the third inning of the second game for a 3-1 lead, and after Christian retook the lead at 4-3 in the top of the fifth, the Mountain Lions scored four in the bottom of the sixth for a 7-4 lead in a scheduled seven-inning game. UCCS retired the first two Cougar batters in the top of the seventh before Christian rallied and tied the game with three runs.
Colorado Christian led off the top of the eighth with a double and took an 8-7 lead.
Scott Martinez led off the bottom half of the inning with a walk and stole second before the Mountain Lions picked up two outs.
Efrain Medina singled to center field and scored Martinez for the game-tying run, but he was tagged out when he advanced to second base on the play as the teams went to the ninth inning tied at 8-8.
The Mountain Lions allowed one base runner in the top of the ninth but kept the Cougars from taking the lead again. Ludwig singled to left-center field on the first pitch in the bottom of the ninth and advanced to second on a wild pitch with two outs. Chapin went down 0-2 early and took three straight balls to load the count at 3-2 before he hit the game-winning single to left field in the 9-8 victory.
Zach Hall, Medina and Ludwig each finished with two hits while Chapin's hit in the ninth was his first of the game.
Daniel Silva recorded seven strikeouts in a six-inning start while
Colin Pratt earned his first win of the season.
Martinez provided a 3-2 lead for the Mountain Lions in game one with a triple in the second inning and scored
Matthew McDermott and
Tyler Keil. He pushed UCCS into the lead against with a double down the left-field line at 4-3 in the fourth inning. Colorado Christian scored one run in the fifth and sixth innings, and two more in the ninth inning, for a 7-4 lead against the Mountain Lions. Martinez was hit by a pitch as the leadoff batter in the bottom of the ninth and scored after a single from Medina, but a fielder's choice for the force-out at second base ended the game in the 7-5 setback in game one.
Martinez went two-for-three with his double and triple with three RBIs, and Medina went three-for-five.
Jamie Crabtree and
John Mallon each finished with a pair of hits.
Eric Neeley took the loss in a seven-inning start for the Moutnain Lions.
UCCS and Colorado Christian will finish the series with a doubleheader on Sunday. The teams will start with a nine-inning game at noon and finished with a seven-inning game at approximately 3 p.m.
