Mountain Lions Split with Grizzlies in Alamosa

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Efrain Medina finished with five RBIs and scored two runs on a three-for-three performance in game one as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs earned a split with Adams State in a pair of seven-inning games. The Mountain Lions (11-11, 6-5 RMAC) won the first game 12-4 before a 5-4 loss in the final inning of the second game against the Grizzlies (8-13, 2-5 RMAC) at the ASU Baseball Field.

UCCS started the day with a three-run performance in the first inning, and after the Grizzlies scored one in the bottom of the first, Medina hit a three-run home run in the second and made it a 6-1 lead for the Mountain Lions. It was his third home run of the season.

Zach Hall and Tyler Matheny earned back-to-back walks to start the fourth inning and Medina drove in Zach Hall from second base on a single to left field. Matheny scored on a ground-rule double from Colin Ludwig and Medina scored on a wild pitch to make it a 9-1 lead with one out. Jamie Crabtree earned the third walk of the inning for the Mountain Lions as UCCS put runners on the corners, but the Grizzlies ended the rally with a strikeout and a fly out to center field.

Adams State scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, but UCCS answered with two runs in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Matheny to score Scott Martinez, and a single from Medina to score Hall. The Grizzlies scored one in the fifth and cut the Mountain Lion lead to 11-4. A wild pitch in the seventh inning made the score 12-4 for UCCS and Michael Gordon struck out two batters in the bottom of the seventh to secure the 12-4 victory in game one.

Hall scored four runs, Matheny scored three and Martinez scored twice as the Mountain Lions scored a season-high 12 runs. Daniel Silva earned his second victory of the season in six innings.

Brant Chapin hit a three-run home run to start the scoring for UCCS in the second game in the top of the second inning. It was his first home run of the conference season and first since Feb. 11, in the final game of a non-conference series at Colorado State-Pueblo. Adams State tied the game in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly and a double on back-to-back batters.

Crabtree provided a lead for the Mountain Lions again with a double in the sixth and scored Colin Ludwig. The Grizzlies responded with the tying run in the bottom of the sixth. Adams State loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with one out, and after UCCS earned the second out with a force-out at home plate, the Grizzlies scored the winning run on single through the right side in a 5-4 decision.

Matheny, Crabtree and Jerry Lacayo each went two-for-three in the second game while Chapin matched his season-high with three RBIs. Will Felton struck out three batters in a five-inning start while Joe Slocum took the loss on the mound in one inning of relief.

UCCS and Adams State will finish the four-game series with a nine-inning game on Sunday. First pitch is set for noon.
