PUEBLO, Colo. –
Brittany Hernandez recorded her ninth 20-point game of the season and
Tori Fisher earned her fourth double-double of the year as the University of Coloardo Colorado Springs opened the 2017 NCAA Division II Tournament with an 89-73 victory against Eastern New Mexico at Colorado State-Pueblo's Massari Arena. The Mountain Lions (24-8) will face Angelo State on Saturday at 5 p.m.
UCCS led by as many as seven points in the first half against Eastern New Mexico (20-9) at 34-27 with one minute, 52 seconds, left in the second quarter, and carried a 38-34 lead into halftime. The Mountain Lions opened the second half on a 23-5 run and made seven of their first nine shots from the field to open a 61-39 advantage in the first six minutes. UCCS led by at least 18 points until the Greyhounds scored the final nine points of the game to cut the winning margin in the last minute.
Hernandez went eight-for-14 from the field with three 3-pointers and added a one-for-two performance from the free throw line.
Tori Fisher scored 17 points with a game-high 11 rebounds, and
Mia Carter scored a season-high 10 points to lead the bench. The Mountain Lions out-rebounded the Greyhounds 51-41 in the second-best rebounding performance of the season.
Jen Vigil led both teams with six assists and made six defensive rebounds, her second-best rebounding performance of the season.
Jennah Knafelc scored nine points to round out the scoring leaders.
The Mountain Lions are in the NCAA Second Round for the second time in program history and the first since 2015. No. 3 seed UCCS will play second-seeded Angelo State (25-5) after the Rambelles won 79-60 against St. Edward's. Saturday's meeting will be the first in history between the two programs.
