RAPID CITY, S.D. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs senior forward
Brittany Hernandez led the Mountain Lions with 15 points and moved into second in program career rebounding records as UCCS (15-7, 12-4 RMAC) earned a season sweep of South Dakota Mines in a 66-51 victory against the Hardrockers (9-13, 7-10 RMAC) tonight at the King Center.
Hernandez increased her career rebounding total to 663 tonight after four rebounds, and moved past Jennine Sauter for second in program history. She also added four steals to lead both teams on defense.
Anna Schwecke led the rebounding for the team tonight with seven.
Kelly O'Flannigan added 10 points and
Chelsea Pearson went three-of-three from the three-point line for nine points. She led the team with four assists.
The Hardrockers took an early 8-3 lead, but the Mountain Lions scored the next 13 points to open a 16-8 lead with two minutes, 18 seconds, left in the first quarter. UCCS shot 63 percent from the field in the second half (10-of-16) and outscored South Dakota Mines 27-12 in the period to take a 46-27 advantage into halftime. The Mountain Lions led by a double-digit margin for the duration of the second half to claim the 15-point win.
UCCS finished with a 38-28 rebounding advantage against South Dakota Mines in the best margin since Jan. 13, against New Mexico Highlands. The Mountain Lions also recorded 15 assists in their best performance since 23 against Adams State on Jan. 6.
The Mountain Lions will drive down Interstate 90 for a 4 p.m., game on Saturday at Black Hills State. The Yellow Jackets (8-13, 8-9 RMAC) fell 76-68 to MSU Denver tonight.?
