POMONA, Calif. – Zach hall went a combined three-of-seven at the plate and
Cam Aufderheide struck out five batters in a four-inning start in game two as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs dropped both games in today's doubleheader with No. 6 Cal Poly Pomona. The Broncos (2-1) won the first game 8-0 and needed a walk-off in game two in the 4-3 decision against the Mountain Lions (1-2). Both games were seven inning contests.
In the second game, Cal Poly loaded the bases in the first inning with one out, but UCCS held the Broncos to no runs after a force out at home plate and a fly out to right field. The Mountain Lions took the first lead of the game in the third inning after Hall reached on a two-out single and scored on a double from
Matthew McDermott. Aufderheide struck out two batters in the bottom of the third, but the Broncos still scored three runs to take a 3-1 advantage.
The Mountain Lions responded with two runs in the top of the fourth after
Brant Chapin led off the inning on a single and scored on a double from
Colin Ludwig. Ludwig reached third on the play when the Broncos threw to home in an attempt to tag out Chapin, and he scored on the next play on a sacrifice fly to right field by
Jamie Crabtree.
John Mallon reached second in the top of the sixth, and Cal Poly put two runners on base in the bottom of the sixth, but the score remained tied at 3-3 going into the seventh inning.
Tyler Matheny reached first to lead off the seventh inning, but couldn't move further as the Broncos were able to retire the next three Mountain Lions in order. Cal Poly took advantage of a UCCS error at the start of the bottom of the seventh, and a single scored the game-winning run for the Broncos.
Hall and McDermott went two-of-four in the second game, and McDermott and Ludwig both posted doubles in the final game of the series.
Cal Poly scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning in the first game of the day to add onto its single run in the first inning. The Broncos added two runs in the bottom of the sixth as UCCS struggled to put a runner on base in the opening game.
The Mountain Lions will close out their program-opening weekend tomorrow in an 11 a.m., MST, game against Hope International. The Royals are 2-0 this season.
