UCCS Opens RMAC Season with Split Against Regis

DENVER – Alex Cook went two-for-three in game two with a double and home run as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs earned a split with Regis in the first RMAC games of the 2017 season. The Mountain Lions (2-5, 1-1 RMAC) dropped an 8-0 game in five innings to open the day before an 8-1 win in game two against the Rangers (9-9, 1-1 RMAC).

Cook scored three of the eight runs for UCCS in game two in her first runs and extra-base hits of the season. She scored in the fourth inning after she led off the inning with a walk, in the sixth after a leadoff double and finished the scoring for the Mountain Lions with a solo home run in the seventh.

Lexi Belligan went two-for-four with a double, and Nikki Hoffman and Makenna Smith also posted a two-for-four plate performance. Rayle Glover hit a two-RBI single in the third inning to score Hoffman and Kylie Barnard, and Melissa Martinek and Amanda Nobles both hit triples in the second game to round out the offensive leaders.

Haley Smith made her first appearance in the pitching circle this season and gave up only one hit in 2.1 innings for the victory. Meghan Waidler came in for relief for the final 4.2 innings and gave up only one run in the fourth inning.

The win came after an 8-0 setback to start the day. Barnard, Nobles and Whitney Weber recorded hits and were able to reach scoring position during the first three innings, but couldn't score against the Rangers in the run-rule decision in five innings. Stephanie Chitkowski was charged with the loss with a three-inning start.

UCCS and Regis will finish the series tomorrow in a doubleheader at 11 a.m.
