COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs recorded six hits but only scored one run as Nebraska-Kearney claimed an 11-1 decision against the Mountain Lions in the final game of a four-game series today at Spurgeon Field. UCCS finished the nonconference record with a 5-6 mark after the first home series in program history.
The Lopers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning off of four hits against the Mountain Lions.
Zach Hall drew a four-pitch walk to open the bottom of the first for UCCS, and reached second after
Tyler Keil singled to left field. Hall scored on a double down the right-field line from
John Mallon to cut the Nebraska-Kearney advantage to 4-1 before a ground out ended the first inning.
The Mountain Lion defense held Nebraska-Kearney to one baserunner in the second inning but gave up two runs in the third as the Lopers opened a 6-1 advantage. UCCS retired Nebraska-Kearney in order in the fourth but the Lopers added runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh for a 10-1 lead. Nebraska-Kearney scored one more in the eighth on a wild pitch and loaded the bases with one out before
Joe Slocum entered and struck out one batter and fielded the ball for the assist to first base on the next batter to finish the inning with no additional runs.
UCCS will be off this upcoming weekend ahead of the start of the RMAC season March 3-5 at Regis. The Rangers are 3-3 after a 10-1 win today at Colorado State-Pueblo in a nonconference contest.
