Hernandez Breaks UCCS Career Rebounding Record on Senior Night

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs senior Brittany Hernandez used a 13-rebound performance to break the Mountain Lion career record as the Mountain Lions (18-7, 14-5 RMAC) moved alone into second place in the RMAC after a 90-49 win against Chadron State (6-16, 6-13 RMAC). Hernandez, forward Tori Fisher and guard Jen Vigil played their final regular season home game in the Gallogly Events Center tonight.

Hernandez improved her career total to 689 and moved past Tara Newton's previous record of 678. She recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 11 points and led the Mountain Lions with three steals tonight.

UCCS went six-of-eight with three-pointers in the first quarter, but Chadron State went four-of-eight to stay within two points of the Mountain Lions at 21-19 at the end of the quarter. UCCS continued to use a strong three-point shooting performance in the second quarter and finished the first half at 53 percent (10-of-19) to take a four-point lead, 36-32, into halftime against the Eagles.

After Chadron State brought the UCCS lead down to two points at 41-39 with 6:40 to play in the third quarter, the Mountain Lions put together a 31-3 run to make it a 72-42 advantage with 6:21 left in the fourth quarter. The UCCS defense held the Eagles to seven points in the fourth quarter while the offense scored 33 points, the most in a single quarter this season.

The Mountain Lions' 41-point victory margin was the largest since UCCS joined the RMAC in 1997, and the eighth-best in program history. UCCS has held five of its last six opponents to less than 60 points, and three of its last five to less than 50 points.

Vigil led UCCS with 18 points with a six-of-10 performance from the three-point line and Fisher added 13 points for the Mountain Lions. Jennah Knafelc led UCCS and matched her season-high with four assists along with 11 points.

UCCS is alone in second in the RMAC standings with three games left in the regular season after tonight's 77-50 loss by Colorado Mesa at Fort Lewis. The Mountain Lions' next two games will be against teams with winning conference records and will start on Saturday, Feb. 18, at MSU Denver. The Roadrunners (15-9, 12-7 RMAC) won the first meeting of the season against UCCS on Jan. 24.
