PUEBLO, Colo. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs redshirt freshman john Mallon went a combined four-of-five at the plate with two RBIs and two runs as the Mountain Lions (3-3) split a doubleheader with Colorado State-Pueblo (2-3) today at Rawlings Field. UCCS won the first game of the day 10-8 before a 13-4 setback in the second game.
The Mountain Lions recorded a season-high 15 hits in the first game, with six hits in the second inning to take a 6-1 lead against the ThunderWolves. UCCS expanded the lead to 8-1 in the top of the third inning after
Tyler Keil hit a two-run home run.
CSU-Pueblo gradually chipped into the Mountain Lion lead with two runs in the third and fourth inning, and a run in the fifth, to make it an 8-6 lead going into the sixth inning. Keil scored his second run of the game off a single from
Efrain Medina to make it a 9-6 lead, but the ThunderWolves scored two in the bottom half of the six to make it a one-run game going into the final inning.
Mallon reached on a single in the top of the seventh and later scored to expand the lead back to two runs for UCCS at 10-8. The ThunderWolves put the go-ahead run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but a ground out to third base closed out the victory for UCCS in game one.
Jamie Crabtree went three-of-three at the plate with two runs and two RBIs in the first game, while Mallon went two-of-three with two runs. Medina, Keil and
Colin Ludwig each finished with multiple hits.
Colin Cicere earned his first win of the season and
Joe Slocum picked up his second save of the season.
CSU-Pueblo took the early lead in the second game with a two-run home run, and
Brant Chapin scored off a double from Mallon to make it a 2-1 game in the bottom of the second. The ThunderWolves scored five runs in third and fourth innings, and added one more in the fifth to take a 13-1 advantage. Ludwig and Chapin scored in the top of the seventh on a two-out single by
Jerry Lacayo, but the Mountain Lions couldn't mount the rally in the 13-3 loss.
Mallon was two-of-two in the second game and Chapin scored two runs.
Cam Aufderheide pitched the first 2.2 innings in the loss.
UCCS and CSU-Pueblo will close out the series with a single nine-inning game on Saturday at noon.
