Shanah Leaf scored nine points as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs dropped an 80-64 exhibition game to the University of Denver tonight in Hamilton Gymnasium. The Mountain Lions finished with a 50-37 rebounding advantage against the Pioneers.
UCCS shot 43 percent from the field in the first half and made nine-of-12 free throw attempts, but a one-of-six performance at the three-point line was counted by Denver's five-of-14 mark from the arc as the teams went into halftime tied at 34.
Maria Haas led the Mountain Lions with eight points in the first half.
The Pioneers opened the second half on a 14-2 run for a 48-36 advantage, and Denver led by a double-digit margin for the final 13 minutes of the game. The Mountain Lions outscored Denver 20-16 in the fourth quarter and used a 13-2 run to pull within 11 points in the final minute at 75-64, but the Pioneers scored the final five in the 16-point margin of victory tonight.
Madi Gaibler and Haas both scored eight points with seven rebounds, and Abby Feickert scored seven points off the bench. Kristen Vigil tied for the game-high with five assists.
UCCS will begin the 2017-18 regular season at home with a Nov. 10, game against West Texas A&M. Tip-off at the Gallogly Events Center is set for 2 p.m.
