LA JOLLA, Calif. – The run will continue for the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's soccer team as they defeated No. 3-ranked UC San Diego 4-3 in a penalty kick shootout in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship.
A No. 2-seed in the tournament, UCCS (17-4-1), will now face the nation's second ranked team Carson-Newman in the semifinals in Kansas City on Nov. 30.
UC San Diego (17-2-3) went ahead in the 13
th minute when Katie O'Laughlin slotted a shot past Taylor Proctor, which was her ninth goal of the season.
The No. 23-ranked Mountain Lions eventually got their equalizer in the 78
th minute when Tarah Patterson notched her ninth goal of the year by converting a penalty kick.
After the two teams played their way to a draw, it would be Proctor who played the hero in the penalty kick shootout as the senior made two stops. In all, Proctor was credited with making eight saves in the game.
UCCS outshot the Tritons 23 to 20 despite taking five corner kicks to their eight.
Individually, Anna Gregg led with a game-high seven shots, placing two on frame as Patterson place three of her five shots on goal.
Notes: This was the first meeting between the two teams… UCCS earned their first draw of the season as they had won their only other game that had gone into extra time, a 2-1 win at Colorado Mines… The Mountain Lions, who have never made the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship, are making their first appearance in the semifinals…
