UCCS Pushes #19 Mines in 3-1 Setback in Golden

GOLDEN, Colo. – Raelynn Edge made 51 assists in her third 50-assist performance of the season as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs pushed No. 19 Colorado School of Mines but came up short in a 3-1 decision tonight at Lockridge Arena. The Mountain Lions (11-9, 8-4 RMAC) fell in 20-25, 24-26, 25-23 and 23-25 set scores to the Orediggers (18-3, 12-0 RMAC).

Mines used a 7-2 run at the end of the first set and for the 1-0 match lead against UCCS. The second set featured 17 ties between the two teams, and the last tie came at 24-24 after back-to-back Mountain Lion kills from Taylor Hamilton and Taylor Smith. UCCS couldn't take the lead as Mines put together its own back-to-back kills and took a 2-0 match lead on the 26-24 decision.

The Mountain Lions assembled a 5-1 rally midway through the third set for an 18-17 lead, but Mines answered with three straight points and retook a 20-18 advantage. Alyssa Brinton made a kill and then assisted on a block with Josie Russell as UCCS tied the set at 20-20.  The Orediggers and Mountain Lions traded points to reach 21-21 and Mines regained the lead at 22-21 before UCCS finished the set on a 4-1 run for the 25-23 win and cut the Mines match lead down to 2-1.

The momentum continued into the fourth set where UCCS opened a 7-3 lead. The Mountain Lions maintained a lead until Mines put together a 9-3 rally for a 16-14 advantage. UCCS retook a one-point lead at 21-20 and kept the margin until 23-22, but the Orediggers closed the set with three straight points and took the set 25-23 and the match 3-1.

Edge finished her most assists since a 52-assist night against Regis Sept. 16, and added five digs and two blocks for the Mountain Lions. She increased her season total to 813 and needs 144 to tie for No. 10 in UCCS single-season records.

Brinton led the UCCS offense with 17 kills and led both teams with four service aces. Hamilton and Smith both finished with 13 kills, and Hamilton hit .423 with three blocks. Russell made a season-high six blocks along with five kills.

Natasha Habert made 21 digs and a season-high five assists tonight. She improved her career total to 1,650 digs and is 21 digs away from tying for second in UCCS records.

The Mountain Lions will travel for the final time in the regular season next weekend in a trip to Black Hills State on Oct. 27, and South Dakota Mines on Oct. 28.
