COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs shot 70 percent from the field in the second half, led by
Justin Smith's 18 second half points, to earn a 94-81 victory against Adams State tonight in the Gallogly Events Center.
Elijah Ross earned his first career double-double with 17 points and 10 assists.
The Mountain Lions (5-9, 4-4 RMAC) trailed by 10 points with four minutes left in the first half and closed out the half on a 10-3 run to make it a one possession game, 42-39, at halftime. UCCS opened the second half on a 14-2 run to turn the deficit into a 53-44 lead, and expanded it to 58-48 as part of a larger 19-4 opening rally. The Grizzlies pulled back within two points at 60-58, but the Mountain Lions responded with a 17-4 run to reopen a double-digit lead at 77-62 with 5:41 to play. UCCS led by at least 12 points for the rest of the night and by as many as 19 to secure the second straight victory of the season.
Smith finished with a game-high 26 points and went 11-of-17 from the field and three-of-four from beyond the three-point arc. He finished one rebound short of his second double-double of the season and led the Mountain Lions with nine boards. Ross matched his career-high with 10 assists in the seventh-best performance in program history and made two blocks on defense.
TreShawn Wilford scored 14 points with eight rebounds and
Blend Avdili rounded out the offensive leaders with 12 points. UCCS went 17-of-28 at the three-point line for 60.7 percent in the best team performance since a road game on Dec. 17, 2010, and the best performance in the Gallogly Events Center in program history. UCCS shot 52 percent overall from the field for its third game in the last four with 50 percent or better.
The Mountain Lions will finish a five-game home stretch on Saturday with a 7:30 p.m., game against Fort Lewis. The Skyhawks (12-3, 7-2 RMAC) fell 80-65 at MSU Denver earlier tonight.
