Hernandez Posts Fifth Double-Double of Season in Loss to MSU Denver

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – University of Colorado Colorado Spring senior forward Brittany Hernandez recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds, but a shot at the buzzer put the Mountain Lions (13-7, 10-4 RMAC) on the short end of a 56-54 decision to MSU Denver (11-8, 8-6 RMAC) tonight in the Gallogly Events Center.

Both teams started slow offensively, with a 13-13 game through the first 14 minutes of the game. The Roadrunners put together a 10-2 run to open an eight-point lead at 23-15 with 3:17 left in the first half, but UCCS pulled back to make it a two-point game at halftime, 25-23.

The Mountain Lions assembled its own 10-2 run in the third quarter and held the Roadrunners to only two field goals in the entire quarter. The Roadrunners made two free throws in the final second of the quarter to cut the UCCS lead down to five points at 40-35.

MSU Denver scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to retake the lead at 41-40, and it was the first of eight lead changes during a five-minute span in the period. Hernandez made a layup and converted a free throw with 2:27 to play to make it 50-48 UCCS lead, and Tori Fisher scored on the next possession as the Mountain Lions built a 52-48 advantage with 1:42 remaining.

The Roadrunners drew a foul and converted two free throws, and then made a layup with 58 seconds left to tie the game at 52-52. The Mountain Lions turned the ball over on a five-second violation on the inbound play, and MSU Denver retook the lead at 54-52 after drawing a foul and making two free throws. Fisher tied the game on a layup with 25.4 seconds to play, which provided the Roadrunners the final possession. MSU Denver ran down the clock, drove down the left side of the lane for the layup, and the ball bounced around on the rim before falling through the net as time expired.

Hernandez finished with her 24th career double-double and shared the team lead with three assists. Jen Vigil added 11 points while Fisher and Madi Gaibler each scored nine. Gaibler made a season-high seven rebounds to match Fisher's performance.

The loss ends a 13-game home winning streak for the Mountain Lions, the second-longest in program history. UCCS remained in fourth in the RMAC standings with eight games left in the regular season. The top eight teams in the standings will advance to the conference tournament, and the top four seeds will host their respective quarterfinal games.

UCCS will remain at home for a 5:30 p.m., Friday contest against Westminster. The Griffins (7-10, 5-8 RMAC) were off tonight but fell 61-51 in their last contest on Saturday at Black Hills State.
