PUEBLO, Colo. – In a matchup between the top two teams in the RMAC, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team struggled shooting inside Massari Arena as the Mountain Lions (12-5, 9-2 RMAC) fell 70-49 to No. 10 Colorado State-Pueblo (17-0, 11-0 RMAC).
Jen Vigil led UCCS with 11 points.
The Mountain Lions played most of the first half without defending RMAC Defensive Player of the Week
Tori Fisher, who picked up two early fouls. CSU-Pueblo took an early 10-4 lead before UCCS assembled a 12-2 run and led 16-12 with 29 seconds left in the first quarter. The ThunderWolves grabbed two offensive rebounds on the final possession of the period and beat the buzzer to cut the Mountain Lion lead down to two points at 16-14.
CSU-Pueblo tied UCCS three times early in the second quarter through 21-21 before
Jennah Knafelc put the Mountain Lions up 24-21 with six minutes left in the period. The ThunderWolves closed out the half on a 16-3 run to take a 37-27 lead into halftime. Knafelc led the UCCS scoring effort with eight points in the first half and
Anna Schwecke led the team with five rebounds.
Brittany Hernandez made a three-pointer 50 seconds into the third quarter, but the Mountain Lions would struggle from the field the rest of the period as the ThunderWolves built a 52-32 lead after the quarter. UCCS was able to draw early fouls against CSU-Pueblo in the fourth quarter and attempted 14 free throws, but only pulled to within 15 points of the ThunderWolves in the setback in Pueblo.
Vigil went four-of-nine from the field and was a perfect two-of-two at the free throw line. She hasn't missed a free throw in four weeks since the Colorado Mines game on Dec. 17.
Brittany Hernandez and Knafelc each added 10 points, and Hernandez finished with a game-high nine rebounds and one rebound away from her fourth double-double of the season. Schwecke made three rebounds in the second half and closed the night with eight in her best performance since the season-opener against Newman on Nov. 11.
UCCS will remain on the road for a weekend trip to Colorado's Western Slope. The Mountain Lions will face Western State on Friday in Gunnison, Colo., and Colorado Mesa on Saturday in Grand Junction, Colo. Both games will start at 5:30 p.m.
