Padiet Wang scored a season-high 27 points and
TreShawn Wilford recorded his second double-double of the season as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs to a 98-88 victory tonight against New Mexico Highlands in the John A. Wilson Complex. The Mountain Lions (6-9, 5-5 RMAC) shot 65 percent from the three-point line, led by Wang's six-of-eight performance.
After the Cowboys scored the game-opening three pointer, the Mountain Lions put together a 16-3 run during the next five minutes to take a 16-6 advantage. UCCS finished the half on a 12-2 run during the final three minutes to expand a 39-30 lead into 52-31 advantage at halftime.
New Mexico Highlands scored on its first 10 possessions of the second half, and 13 of its first 14, to cut the UCCS lead to five points at 65-60 with 11:27 to play in the game. Wang scored the next nine points for the Mountain Lions as UCCS retook a 10-point lead at 74-64 at the 7:20 mark, and the Mountain Lions kept the Cowboys at a double-digit distance to close out the game with the 98-88 win. UCCS went six-of-six at the free throw line in the final minute to clinch the first road victory of the season with the highest point total of the season.
The 65 percent three-point mark was the best performance for the Mountain Lions since Nov. 17, 2006, when UCCS shot 67 percent against Northern Colorado. The Mountain Lions have shot 60 percent or better from beyond the arc in two of the last three games. UCCS finished at 53 percent overall from the field and have surpassed the 50 percent mark in three of the last four games.
Wang's 27 points surpassed his previous season-best by 12 points, set in a 15-point performance against Colorado College on Nov. 28. He also led the team with a season-high five assists. Avdili added 21 points in the first 20-point game of his career and went six-of-six at the free throw line.
Wilford recorded his double-double by halftime and finished the game with 16 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.
Ian MacDonald and
Justin Smith both added eight points for the offense.
UCCS will travel tonight on Interstate 25 to take on Colorado State-Pueblo in a 7:30 p.m., game on Saturday. The ThunderWolves (10-5, 8-2 RMAC) defeated MSU Denver 89-70 tonight at Massari Arena.
