UCCS Sets New Hitting Record in Sweep of Missouri Southern

.419 hitting percentage breaks 6-year old record

GOODWELL, Okla. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs hit a program-record .419 and trailed only once in a 3-0 sweep of Missouri Southern this morning in the Aggie Classic. The Mountain Lions (2-1) earned the victory in 25-9, 25-15 and 25-19 sets against the Lions (1-2) at the Oscar Williams Field House.

Today's performance breaks a 6-year old record of .411, set on Nov. 5, 2010, against Chadron State. The Mountain Lions have turned in two of their top five hitting performances in program history this week after a .403 mark against Oklahoma Panhandle State to open the season on Sept. 1.

UCCS opened an early 8-2 led in the first set, and continued to expand with nine straight points to take a 19-4 lead against Missouri Southern. Alyssa Brinton accounted for three of those points with kills on her way to a team-high 11 kills for the match. The 25-9 victory in the first set was the time the Mountain Lions held a team to less than 10 points since 2012.

The Lions scored the first point in the second set, but UCCS scored six of the next seven to hold a 6-2 advantage. Missouri Southern put together back-to-back points to make it a 7-5 set, but UCCS wouldn't let them get that close for the rest of the set for the 25-15 victory and a 2-0 match lead. The Mountain Lions hit .542 in the second set with only two errors on 15 kills and 24 attacks.

UCCS used four kills and a service ace to help build an 8-3 lead in the third set, but Missouri Southern rallied to tie the set twice at 12-12 and 13-13. UCCS put together another 8-3 run to open a 21-16 advantage, and scored three of the final four points to claim the set 25-19 in the second sweep of the season.

Morgan Evans made 31 assists along with four kills and seven digs on defense. She is averaging 10.9 assists per set, on pace for fourth in UCCS records and the best since the 25-point era began in 2008. Natasha Habert made 11 digs. Evans and Taylor Hamilton both finished with a pair of blocks

UCCS will finish the opening weekend today at 4 p.m., MDT, against Northwestern Oklahoma State. The Rangers (0-2) play Missouri Southern today at noon MDT.
