COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –
Lauren Brown made a career-high 19 kills and seven blocks to lead the University of Colorado Colorado Springs to a 3-1 victory against Regis tonight in the Gallogly Events Center. The Mountain Lions (6-4, 1-1 RMAC) won for the first time against the Rangers (4-6, 0-2 RMAC) since 2010 with 25-23, 28-26, 20-25 and 25-21 set scores.
UCCS made a season-high 10 blocks and recorded its best hitting percentage since Sept. 3, with .252. Brown hit .571 off of 28 attacks and only three errors for the fifth-best performance for a Mountain Lion in a four-set match in program history.
The Mountain Lions used a 7-2 run early in the match to build a 9-5 lead against the Rangers. UCCS never trailed the rest of the opening set and held off a Regis surge late in the set to take the early match lead on a 25-23 set win.
Regis reached set point at 24-22 in the second set before kills from Brown and
Grace Nelson tied the set at 24-24. A serve in the net by the Mountain Lions provided another opportunity for Regis to win the set at 25-24, but the Mountain Lions capitalized on an attacking error and then used a block from
Taylor Hamilton and
Morgan Evans, and kills from Nelson and
Alyssa Brinton to rally and win the second set 28-26. The teams tied 15 times in the set.
UCCS and Regis tied 11 times in the third set, the last time at 18-18, before the Rangers pulled away and closed the set on a 7-2 run to take the set 25-20. The teams tied another 12 times in the fourth set before a kill from Brinton sparked the match-winning 5-1 run to secure the first home win against Regis since 2009.
Brinton finished with 13 kills and added six blocks and 11 digs on defense, while Hamilton rounded out the offensive leaders with 12 kills.
Natasha Habert made 16 digs in the back row and
Morgan Evans made 49 assists to lead both teams.
UCCS will return to the road to continue the conference season with a trip in southwestern Colorado Sept. 23-34. The Mountain Lions open at Fort Lewis on Friday before doubling back for a Saturday night contest at Adams State. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m.
