Morgan Evans led the Mountain Lions with solid performances in kills, assists, service aces and digs as UCCS finished its Florida trip with a 3-0 setback to No. 23 Florida Southern to wrap up the Terrace Classic. The Moccasins (6-1) won in 25-16, 28-26 and 25-18 sets against the Mountain Lions.
Evans led UCCS with 28 assists and three service aces, and added nine digs and four kills. She needs 51 assists to become the sixth Mountain Lion in program history with 2,000 in her career. Evans is 202 assists away from tying for sixth in UCCS records.
Florida Southern used a pair of extended runs to open a 1-0 match lead on a 25-16 decision in the first set. The Moccasins opened another large lead at 17-10 in the second set before the Mountain Lions used a 6-1 rally to cut the deficit down to 18-16. UCCS kept Florida Southern from scoring back-to-back points and tied the set at 21-21. The Mountain Lions took the Moccasins to extra points with a tied score at 25-25, but Florida Southern closed out the set with a kill and block to secure the set at 27-25 and the match lead at 2-0.
After Florida Southern scored the first four points of the third set, the Mountain Lions pulled back within a point of the Moccasins at 10-9 off a service ace from Evans. Florida Southern responded with three straight points and stayed at least three points ahead of UCCS for the remainder of the set for the 25-18 result and the 3-0 match score.
Alyssa Brinton led the team with 12 kills, and has led or shared the offensive lead for the Mountain Lions in every match this season. She earned a selection to the Terrace Classic All-Tournament Team after tonight's match after she averaged 4.31 kills.
Natasha Habert made 18 digs to lead the back row, and averaged 6.4 this weekend.
The Mountain Lions will open the home and RMAC season on Friday with a 7 p.m., match against Chadron State. The Eagles went 1-7 in their first two weekends.
