GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. –
Kylie Barnard went two-of-three with a double and drove in
Melissa Martinek in the fourth inning for the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, but the Mountain Lions (21-22) suffered a 5-1 setback to Chadron State (28-17-1) to open the 2016 RMAC Tournament at the Colorado Mesa Softball Field. UCCS will move to the consolation bracket and take on Colorado State-Pueblo at 8:30 a.m., on Friday.
Both teams battled rain through the first half of the game after the game was postponed to noon from an original 8:30 a.m., start time. The RMAC will only play the first four games of the tournament today, with elimination games starting on Friday.
Chadron State led off the game with a triple, but it would lead to the only run for the Eagles in the first inning. The Eagles added another run in the bottom of the second for a 2-0 lead. Chadron State used a two-run home run as part of a three-run performance in the third inning to take a 5-0 lead against the Mountain Lions.
UCCS put runners on base in each of the first three innings, but didn't get a run across until Barnard's hit to left field scored Martinek from first base in the fourth inning. Martinek reached scoring position in the sixth inning after a single to right field and a ground out to the pitcher moved her to second. A pop out prevented her from scoring her second run of the game.
Barnard singled up the middle to open the top of the seventh, but after
Leigh Lancaster came in as a pinch runner, the Eagles used a fielder's choice to take out the lead runner and allow
Whitney Weber to reach first base. Weber moved to a second base on a ground out by
Lexi Belligan, but a ground out to the shortstop ended the comeback for the Mountain Lions in a 5-1 result.
Barnard recorded her second straight multi-hit game and her seventh of the season. She has hit half of her doubles this season in the last two games.
Amanda Nobles and Martinek both went 1-of-2 while
Makenna Smith and
Jordyn Cusimano both went 1-of-3.
Dani Fonseca took the loss in the start with a pair of strikeouts in 2.1 innings.
Friday's game will be an elimination game for the two teams. UCCS and CSU-Pueblo split their regular season series on March 5-6 in Pueblo, Colo. The Lion's Den Pregame Show will begin at 8 a.m., with Charlie Botnick.
